  1. Lewis Dot Diagrams Eight valence electrons are in a stable octet • How many electrons are in a stable octet? • To what electrons does a stable octet refer? (Valence, inner, third energy level) • How many electrons does a “stable octet” of hydrogen contain? • Why is a stable octet different for hydrogen than for the other elements. • When a bond forms, how many electrons must be involved in the bond. Eight valence electrons are in a stable octet Two valence electrons are in a stable octet for hydrogen. Hydrogen has only the 1s orbital to fill. A pair of electrons (2 e-) are shared to make a bond.

  2. To draw a simple Lewis Dot diagram for HCl H Cl Hydrogen has one valence electron Chlorine has seven valence electrons When a bond forms, the hydrogen has two valence electrons And the chlorine has eight valence electrons

  3. To draw a simple Lewis Dot diagram for CCl4 Cl C Cl Cl Cl Carbon has four valence electrons Chlorine has seven valence electrons When a bond forms, the chlorine has eight valence electrons and the carbon gains one extra electron from each Chlorine until it has eight valence electrons

  4. Questions • How many valence electrons are involved in a bond? • How many electrons will each atom (except H) end up with after it forms a bond? • Can more than one atom bond at the same time? Two valence electrons are shared in a bond. Eight valence electrons are obtained by each atom. Yes.

  5. What happens if there aren’t enough electrons? O C O Oxygen has six valence electrons, Carbon has four. With two oxygen atoms, there are a total of 2(6) + 4 = 12 + 4 = 16 electrons OOPS! OOPS!

  6. Quiz: Exit Pass • Write the following Lewis Dot Diagrams • C • F • N • S • O • CF4 • SO2
