  2. Valence electrons • Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom, they are the ones in the last orbital. • These are the electrons that are used in bonding.

  3. Atoms in the same column have the same number of valence electrons. All of the alkali metals have 1 valence electron All of the alkaline earth metals have 2 valence electrons. All of the elements in column 13 have 3 valence electrons. All of the elements in column 14 have 4 valence electrons All of the elements in column 15 have 5 valence electrons All of the elements in column 16 have 6 valence electrons All of the halogens have 7 valence electrons All of the noble gases have 8 valence electrons. • Because they have the same number of valence electrons, they share many of the same properties.
