  1. ANCA and the power of youth U. Michelle Hagopian

  2. What is the ANCA? • The ANCA stands for the Armenian National Committee of America. We have three separate offices in the United States: • Headquarters – Washington D.C. • Eastern Region – Watertown, MA • Western Region – Glendale, CA

  3. What is the ANCA? • The ANCA is the largest grassroots advocacy organization representing the views and values of our nation’s Armenian-American community. • Working in coordination with a network of offices, local committees and supporters in the United States, the ANCA actively advances the concerns of Armenian Americans on a broad range of issues.

  4. What does grassroots mean?

  5. What does grassroots mean? • An organization that is built from the bottom up, like the ANCA, is considered a grassroots organization. • The ANCA relies on contributions from its supporters, often your everyday neighbor, to thrive and prosper. • Think of it this way – the ANCA has planted seeds at the bottom in order to grow and expand.

  6. What does ANCA do? • ANCA will pursue any issue or concern important to Armenian Americans, including, but not limited, to: • Genocide recognition • Azeri aggression • Nagorno-Karabakh recognition • Human rights justice • Protection of Armenian churches • Lobbying Congress • Supporting Armenian youth • Genocide curriculum in schools

  7. What does ANCA do? • OK, but where do I find specifics? • Go to www.anca.org for information on anything you care to pursue. The website features press releases, action alerts and resolutions past and present. • Or, email U. Michelle at michelle@anca.org anytime!

  8. The power of youth • As juniors or seniors, it’s easy to look at the ANCA and think the organization is meant just for older people…

  9. The power of youth • The ANCA is meant for YOU. • You don’t have to be a political science major or an academic to have an interest in helping the ANCA. • The beauty of the ANCA is that its supporters come from a multitude of backgrounds…

  10. The power of youth • Business • Politics ALL OF THESE • Journalism MATTER AND • International affairs ARE USEFUL! • Creative arts • Marketing • History • Accounting • Think tanks • Foreign languages • Education

  11. A new perspective • Q: What do young people bring to the table? • A: A fresh set of eyes and new perspective.

  12. A new perspective • Young people see the world in a way that is naïve and untarnished. In the sometimes frustrating world of policy and nonprofit work, that is crucial. • The older you get, the easier it is to become jaded by the world and to have less hope. • What do Armenians need? More hope, optimism and resolve to fight for our issues.

  13. What should we work toward? • Armenian youth – especially AYFers – understand the importance of Hai Tahd to our cause. • If you have a topic you feel strongly about, bring it up to your chapter and executive. Don’t be shy in speaking up about what is important to you. • What you care about could be the next big issue the ANCA fights for…you never know.

  14. Ideas for youth • For inspiration, here are a few ideas… • Write a paper/do a project on the Genocide for school • Organize an Armenian book drive for your community • Write letters to your Congressional representatives • Volunteer for a campaign that the ANCA supports (phone banking, for example) • Draft a Genocide resolution for your state legislature • *Currently, 40+ states have recognized the Genocide

  15. States that have recognized the Armenian Genocide (in red)

  16. The power of social media • We all know how vital social media is to our lives. For better or worse, it’s here to stay. • The ANCA has grasped the advent of technology and relies on it to help get the job done.

  17. Find us online! • Website: anca.org • Facebook: ANCA • Twitter: @ANCA_DC • @ANCA_ER • @ANCA_WR

  18. Getting involved is simple • Anyone can join ANCA’s efforts. It can be as easy as organizing a dinner or picnic, as the ANC of Rhode Island did this fall… • ANC Hosts ‘Meet the Candidates’ Picnic

  19. Where do I begin? • Talk to your AYF chapter or ARF adviser. • Email U. Michelle Hagopian at michelle@anca.org for any questions, concerns or comments you may have.

  20. Step up • The ANCA has been a success thus far because Armenians have been willing to rise to the challenge. We need more of that in our young people. • Become an activist and start your HaiTahd career today!
