  2. Bellwork: September 9, 2011 • In your journals, please write anything you know or have heard about September 11th 2001.

  3. 9-11- Facts: KEY VOCABULARY: • Terrorism: violent acts intended to create fear, targets are usually non-military civilians • Osama bin Laden: person responsible for organizing and funding 9-11 attacks • Pentagon: headquarters of U.S. Department of Defense, located in Northern Virginia • World Trade Center: group of 7 buildings in NYC, included the Twin Towers; financial hub • Al-Qaeda: Terrorist group lead by bin Laden

  4. 9-11-01 Facts • 4 Terrorist Acts happened: 1. 1st plane hit North Tower- 8:46 (around 50,000 people work there) 2. 2nd plane hit South Tower- 9:03 3. Plane hit Pentagon- 9:37 4. Hijacked plane crashed in field in PA. (plane’s destination was either the Capitol Building or White House) • It was discovered that Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda were responsible for attacks- recruited 19 Hijackers to take planes. • These men trained in Afghanistan

  5. Attack on Pentagon • A plane crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 AM • A memorial was built for the 184 people who lost there lives that day

  6. Shanksville, PA • Flight 93 Crashed into a field • Civilians on flight are heroes because they took back plane from hijackers • Destination was either U.S. Capitol or White House

  7. 9-11: A National Day of Service • After 9-11-01, people came from all over the U.S. to help in anyway they can, those affected by this tragedy. • It’s a day to remember those innocent people who lost their lives and those who lost loved ones. • Why is this topic of service to community and giving back particularly relevant to your community of Denville today? • For extra credit this weekend, do something kind (random act of kindness) for someone or volunteer to help someone (or organization).

  8. 9-11 Ten Years Later • Shortly after 9-11, the U.S. invaded Afghanistan to find bin Laden- we are still at war there • On May 2, 2011, bin Laden was killed in a raid by Navy Seals • On Sunday, a memorial will be unveiled at “Ground Zero”, where the Twin Towers fell
