  4. Legislature • Lawmaking Body (group of people) • US Congress modeled after England’s Parliament • Parliament is stronger than the King/Queen

  5. Natural Rights • John Locke • Life, Liberty and Property • (We changed to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness)

  6. Social Contract • Jean Jaques Rosseau • Must give up some freedoms in exchange for government protection

  7. Separation of Powers • Baron de Montesquieu • Separate branches of government to balance it

  8. Popular Sovereignty • Government by the consent (approval) of the people
