Work Package Main Objectives 1/14 • To ensure and improve the reliable and accurate provision of a regional ocean forecast service on the IBI region • To ensure management of service and products, update on new IBI products (i.e. Re-analysis) • To provide a back-up capability: • A nominal system IBI-NOM operated by Puertos del Estado • A Back-up system IBI-BUP, operated by Mercator. • The system will include modeling improvements and advances derived from R&D when demonstrated. • A robust Tier 1 R&D activity is planned in order to address specific demands of improvement in the operational system • To contribute to enhance IBI users community MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013

  4. System & Production Evolution 3/14 • Objectives for V3 were • Make evolve IBI numerical solution • Upgrade IBI operational suites in Production Lines • Enhance Back-Up Services (exchange between PCs) • Improve CAL/VAL capabilities MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013

System & Production Evolution 4/14 • Main achievements for V3 are • IBI-V3 solution includes improved river discharge data • A more robust & efficient operational suite: • Some sources of IBI incidents minimized with • incorporation of some extra QC procedures • Noticeable upgrade of IBI-MFC Validation capabilities: • Launch of NARVAL (north Atlantic Regional VALidation) Tool MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013

System & Production Evolution 5/14 • Main difficulties encountered • Changes in computational environment in both Production lines: • Significant changes in Production hardware • environments both in NOM (PdE-CESGA for V3) • & BUP (MO-MF for V4) •  Open issue: Risk for operational V3 & V4 services ? System & Production Evolution 7/14 • Main difficulties encountered • Results from Test of internal BUP production services: • Slightly difference in final products format (i.e. netcdf file format) has an unexpected impact on the download of mixed IBI (NOM & BUP production origin) data through subsetter service (PdEMisGW) ... OK FOR HOURLY PRODUCTS NOK FOR DAILY PRODUCTS MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013

  9. Improvements, results, illustrations 8/14 • IBI solution upgrades: • IBI-V3 will have a more realistic inputs for river discharge runoff data used. (More details on QuID) IBI River inputs locations. In green: daily runoffs hindcasts from E-HYPE model (SMHI) In red: daily runoffs obs data from PREVIMER (FCs from E-HYPE only ) River runoffs of Adour (on the left) and Garonne (on the right). Red line: monthly climatology runoffs used inIBI-V1, blue line daily runoffs used in IBI-V2and green line daily runoffs which take into account tributaries and used in IBI-V3. IBI CAL/VAL improvements 9/14 • IBI Improved CalVal capabilities • Noticeable upgrade of the IBI-MFC Validation capabilities: Launch of NARVAL Tool (On-line & Delayed Mode) • Statistics covering longer periods (monthly, seasonal and annual reviews)  MyO Quarterly Validation Reports • Validation of daily IBI FC cycle. The Spanish IBI User Group: Institutions… 11/14 • 13 Groups articulates (by now) the Spanish Users Network: • 11 Intermediate/end user. • 2 Institutions related to MyO MCS. • Number of people implicated: • 25 technical contacts (already members of the mailing list) • 23 attendees to the Spanish IBI User Group Kick-off Meeting

First period summary and next steps 12/14 • Objectivesfor V3 accomplished • Amelioration axis: • Operationalaspects: • Reduction of execution times associatedtomodel and computerchanges • IncreaseRobustness, preventing new risksidentifiedbefore V4 • Complete the full B.U. solution • R&D aspects • Improvement of engineering procedures to validate and include R&D tier 1 developments • Complete IBI R&D plan as established in PMP • Service and user outreach • Enhance user feedback (i.e. bug detection in current IBI products, new taylored user-oriented products) MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – 17-18 April 2013
