  3. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Review – Sacrifice of Christ… Where is the scripture that tells us Christ was tempted in all things? Hebrews 4:15 List the names/titles of Christ as found in the New Testament. Word; Savior; High Priest; Lord; Teacher; Son of Man; Son of God; God

  4. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Review – Sacrifice of Christ… Explain Colossians 2:14. The debt of sin was nailed to the cross and not the law of God. What does the word “propitiation” mean? Atonement, forgiveness, appeasing

  5. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Agony of Crucifixion…

  6. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Fundamental Belief – Three Days and Three Nights… Jesus Christ was raised from the dead by the Father after His body lay for three days and three nights in the grave. The length of time that He was in the grave was the only sign He gave to prove He was the Messiah. The resurrection of Jesus Christ made immortality possible for mortal human beings. After His resurrection, Christ ascended into heaven, where He now sits at the right hand of God the Father as our High Priest, elder Brother and Advocate with the Father.

  7. Key Verse in Understanding… Matthew 12:39-40… “But He answered and said to them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Johan was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.’”

  8. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Crucifixion and Burial of Jesus Christ Outside City of Jerusalem…

  9. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Matthew 27:33-35… “And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull… Then they crucified Him…”

  10. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Matthew 27:33-35… Golgotha, just outside Jerusalem. The term means place of the skull. This is the traditional site of Christ’s crucifixion.

  11. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Matthew 27:59-60… “And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.”

  12. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Church literature left little doubt as to the proper teaching regarding the death and resurrection of Christ.

  13. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Answer to this problem must be found in scripture. (2 Timothy 3:16) What do the scriptures tell us about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?

  14. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Everyone claims that his belief comes from the Bible. Does the Bible really say that Christ was crucified on Friday and resurrected on Sunday morning?

  15. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Let’s do the math. Is it possible to get three days and three nights from Friday to Sunday? Friday at six PM… Burial Saturday at six PM… 1 day and 1 night Sunday morning at six AM… 1 night Total = 1 day and 2 nights (36 hours)

  16. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God It is impossible to arrive at three days and three nights from Friday sunset to Sunday sunrise. One must find some way to deny the Scripture or explain away the time element as not being important. Yet Christ said it was the “only” sign.

  17. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Did Christ mean three days and three nights or did He mean parts of three days and nights? Matthew 12:38-40. Is this text legitimate? Are there other ways to read what is written? Was Christ possibly crucified on a day other than Friday?

  18. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God What constitutes a day? Genesis 1:5 “… So the evening and the morning were the first day.” On a round earth a day consists of a period of night and a period of day– 12 hours of each. John 11:9 “… Are there not 12 hours in the day?”

  19. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Matthew 12:38-40 “Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, Teacher, we want to see a sign from You. But He answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

  20. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Jonah 1:17 “Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”

  21. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Crucifixion – Wednesday, Passover Day in 31 A.D. 9:00 AM. Christ is crucified (Mark 15:25) 12 Noon to 3:00 PM. He is resurrected about 6:00 PM at the end of the third day. Total – 72 hours, three days and three nights “The Three Days and Three Nights”

  28. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Terms to consider… “Sign of Jonah” = 3 days and 3 nights “After three days” = Matthew 27:63; Mark 8:31; Mark 9:31 (NAS, RSV, NIV, AMP); Mark 10:34 (NAS, RSV, NIV, AMP) “The third day” = Matthew 16:21; Matthew 17:23; Matthew 20:19; Luke 9:22; Luke 18:33; Luke 24:7; Luke 24:46 “In three days” = Matthew 26:61; Matthew 27:40; Mark 15:29; John 2:19

  29. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Terms to consider… “Within three days” = Mark 14:58 “Three days and three nights” = Matthew 12:40 In Mark 9:31 and Mark 10:34 many translations use the word “after” three days. Examples are ASV; BBE; RSV.

  30. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Only one time fits all the descriptors given in the Bible… Sign of Jonah After three days 6:00 P.M. on Sabbath afternoon The third day In three days Within three days Three days and three nights

  31. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Matthew 28:1-2… Greek sabbaton, plural or singular depending on the context. “Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.” There was a great earthquake - Rather there “had been.” It does not mean that this was while they were there, or while they were going, but that there “had been” so violent a commotion as to remove the stone (Barnes).

  32. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Matthew 28:1… Sabbaton Matthew 12:10 (KJV) “And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days (sabbaton)?’ that they might accuse him.”

  33. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Questions… Does Matthew 12:40 contain a Hebrew “idiom” which means parts of three days and parts of three nights? Quote from Bullinger: “When the number of nights is stated as well as the number of days, then the expression ceases to be an idiom, and becomes a literal statement of fact” (Appendix 144, page 170 of Bullinger’s Companion Bible).

  34. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Questions… Did Christ mean three days and three nights or did He mean parts of three days and three nights? Matthew 12:38-40. Is this text legitimate? Are there other ways to read what is written? Was Christ crucified on a day other than Friday?

  35. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Questions… Luke 24:21 “But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.” From Greek ago (άγω): to lead; to take one; to lead by accompanying; to lead, guide, direct; to pass a day; to keep or celebrate a feast (Thayers). Or to “pass” in reference to time (Strongs). Other places where ago is used: Luke 4:1 (led into the wilderness); Romans 8:14 (led by the Holy Spirit); Romans 2:4 (leads you to repentance).

  36. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Luke 24:21… “But we were hoping that He would be the Savior of Israel. In addition to all this He has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place” (BBE).

  37. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Evidence for a Wednesday Crucifixion… Calculated Calendar from 26-33 AD • 26 AD Passover = Friday • 27 AD Passover = Wednesday • 28 AD Passover = Monday • 29 AD Passover = Saturday • 30 AD Passover = Wednesday • 31 AD Passover = Wednesday * • 32 AD Passover = Monday • 33 AD Passover = Friday * Controversy over cycle change in 142(?)

  38. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Evidence for a Wednesday Crucifixion… Calculated Calendar from 26-33 AD Only three dates to consider: 30 AD 31 AD 33 AD 70 weeks prophecy from Daniel produces 27 AD for Christ to begin His ministry. Since there are four Passovers in His ministry, only 31 AD meets all criteria.

  39. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Evidence for 31 AD (Daniel 9:25-27)… • Decree of Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem is dated 457 BC. • 69 weeks of the 70 weeks are to expire prior to the appearance of the Messiah. • 69 weeks = 483 years (7 x 69) • 457 BC plus 483 years = 26 + 1 (for zero) or 27 AD for the appearance of the Messiah.

  40. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Let’s do the math… 69 weeks (69 x 7) = 483 yrs Decree of Artaxerxes - 457 BC 26 AD (no year zero) + 1 27 AD Christ is baptized and begins His ministry at the age of 30. This was the fall of 27 AD. After 3 ½ years of ministry He was crucified on Passover in 31 AD.

  41. Fundamental Beliefs of the Church of God Evidence for 31 AD… • Christ appears and is baptized in the fall of 27 AD at the age of 30 (Luke 3:23). • Four Passovers are recorded in His ministry – 28; 29; 30; and 31 AD. Scriptures: John 2:13; John 5:1; John 6:4; and John 13. • Final Passover would be 31 AD.
