  2. Red Bud Cerciscanadensis -heart shaped leaf -small, edible, magenta (purple) flowers in the spring - typically grows 20-30 feet tall

  3. Black Walnut Juglansnigra -most commercially valuable tree in SMESL -can grow to 100+ feet -wood is valued for making furniture -nut is valued as a food source

  4. Sycamore Platanusoccidentalis -large, maple like leaves -can grow to 130’ -most often found in moist lowlands or along riparian areas

  5. Eastern Cottonwood Populusdeltoides -petiole (stem of the leaf) is flat -due to the flat stem of the leaf, the leaf has the tendency to shake from even the slightest breeze -can grow to 130’ -state tree of Kansas -gets its name from the cotton like strands that are attached to their seeds

  6. Roughleaf Dogwood Cornusdrummondii -grows 15-25’ tall -at least 40 species of birds are known to eat its fruit

  7. Honey Locust Gleditsiatriacanthos -grows 60-100’ -grows very fast -legume

  8. American Elm Ulmusamericana -can grow to 100+’ -effected by Dutch Elm disease -leaf feels rough

  9. Osage Orange Maclurapomifera -typically grow 40-60’ -also known as hedge or hedge tree

  10. Shingle Oak Quercusimbricaria -commonly grows to 80’ -atypical oak leaf shape -most common oak tree found in the SMESL -most often found in upland areas with good drainage

  11. Shagbark Hickory Caryaovata -can grow over 100’ -gets its name from the shaggy looking bark -most common “hickory” in the SMESL

  12. Ohio Buckeye Aesculusglabra -typically grows 50-80’ -flowers early in spring

  13. Hackberry Celtis sp. -normally grows 40-60’ -about 60 different “hackberry” species worldwide -easily identified by its trunk

  14. Eastern Red Cedar Juniperusvirginiana -only native evergreen tree -can live up to 850 years -can grow to 80’ but normally found at 15-60’ -host to apple cedar rust
