  2. Its Beginnings • Allah- Arabic name for God • Muhammad- Islamic prophet • Was talked to by Allah to spread the word of Islam • Began to preach in Mecca, but group was forced out • Lead a Hijrah, or pilgrimage, to Yathrib • Followers returned to Mecca in 630 A.D.

  3. 5 Pillars of Islam • Faith- Must make following statement, “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” • Prayer- Done five times a day and must face towards Mecca • Alms- Giving money to the poor • Fasting- Holy month of Ramadan, eat nothing between sunrise and sunset • Pilgrimage- Called a hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, once in their lifetime

  5. Muslim Achievement • Al-Razi, a Persian scholar, wrote two main books on medicine and recommended the location of the first hospital • Reliance on scientific observation and experimentation • Ability to find mathematical solutions to old problems.

Muslim Achievement Cont’d • Mathematician in 700’s found an “art of bringing together unknowns to match a known quantity” • New philosophy was called al-jabr in Arabic, but we know it as Algebra. • Many advances in math attributed to study of astronomy • Studies during this time used to develop telescope and microscope lenses

  7. Muslim Achievement Cont’d • Calligraphy, or beautiful, ornate handwriting, was developed • Calligraphy allowed for prayers and sayings to be spoken through drawings • 1,001 Nights was written • Society changed roles; Was split into 4 classes • Women had many rights

  8. Your Project • You are to create a flip book depicting the 5 Pillars of Islam. • This book must have a cover sheet, list each pillar, give a description of that pillar, and have an illustration of the pillar being described

  9. Vocabulary • Caliph • Umayyads • Shi’a • Sunni • House of Wisdom • Calligraphy

  10. Section 2 Notes • Shi’a- Means “party” of Ali; felt the next leader should be a relative of Muhammad • Sunni- Means followers of Muhammad’s example, not a relative

Section 3 Notes • For Section 3 Notes, you are going to create a Web Diagram • You will need to discuss Art and Literature, Science and Math, and Society • You should find three (3) points to each main idea • Describe each main idea and supporting idea in a two sentence detail in your notes. This will count as your Section 3 Notes
