  18. The Importance of Preventive Dental Care Dominion’s plans emphasize prevention and early detection of dental problems and can help you diagnose medical problems before they become serious and expensive. Routine dental checkups can discover oral cancer, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory ailments, skin diseases, thyroid problems and leukemia.1,2 Nearly 75% of American adults suffer from various forms of periodontal (gum) disease and don’t know it.1 Over 20 million workdays are lost each year due to dental illness.3 The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, thyroid cancer and skin cancer.3 Tooth decay is the single most chronic childhood disease - five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever.4 1  Gustin, K.M. (2006, Dec.). Discussing dental. 24. Our Beliefs About DisabilityAre You at Risk? • Each year, more than one in ten U.S. adults suffers a long-term disability. [U.S. Census Bureau, 2004] • A disabling injury occurs every 1.3 seconds ― on and off the job. • That’s over 63,000 every day, more than 23 Million every year. [National Safety Council, Injury Facts 2005-2006 Edition] • Almost 3 in 10 of today's 20 year-olds will become disabled before age 67. [Social Security Administration, Social Security Fact Sheet, July 2006] • Once someone has been disabled for 90 days, the average length of their disability is two years. [Commissioners Group Disability Basic Table, Society of Actuaries, 1987] People insure — Their possessions • Houses • Cars Their lives • Income protection for their survivors Their health But they don't think about insuring or protecting their income. "Optimism Bias" can keep people from believing they could suffer a disability — “It can’t happen to me.”

  25. The Causes of Disability How Disability Insurance Helps Employees • Safeguard lifestyle • Protect loved ones • Peace of mind Employers • Retention/recruiting tool • Good will — when employees understand the benefit, they appreciate the “safety net” • Plan provisions (like Return to Work) can help your valuable employees get back to a more productive and rewarding life Disability can be caused by an accident, but … Most disabilities are caused by common illnesses. Major causes include: • Heart disease • Back problems • Diabetes • Depression
