  2. What is Current Electricity? Involves the flow of electrons in a controlled way through a conductor.

  3. Electric Circuits • A circuit is the path that the electron flow through. • Basic parts of a circuit: • Source – the source of electrons (battery, etc) • Conductor – provides a path for the electrons (wires) • Load – converts the electrical energy into other forms of energy (light bulb, motor, etc) • Switch – controls the flow of electrons • Open switch = no flow of electrons • Closed switch = flow of electrons

  4. Electrical Energy • Measured in Joules (J) • Electrical devices use electrical energy to do work (measured in Watts  W) • Light bulb: electrical energy  light energy • Motor: electrical energy  motion

  5. Sources of Electrical Energy • Electric Cells: a device that coverts chemical energy into electrical energy (a.k.a. a battery) • Primary cell – can only be used once • Secondary cell – can be recharged • Fuel Cells: a special kind of electric cell through which a continuous supply of chemicals is pumped as the cell operates.

  7. Forms of Current Electricity • Direct Current (DC) – the electrons flow in only one direction (a battery produces DC current) • Alternating Current (AC) – the electrons move back and forth (a generator produces AC current) • More efficient in distributing electrical energy
