Background and justification • Malaysian Trade Union Congress was formed late 1950.It was registered in 1955 on line with the country society act of the same year.Since it formation it has established itself as a strong body to fight on workers right. It have helped the workers to understand what workers ringht and freedom of association is all about. It offficers had also participate in local and international forum on workers right.In line with the ILO policy MTUC also play a major role in trapatite relation with the goverment and the employer.

  4. Affiliation of MTUC

Affiliation membership • MTUC had about half a million member in the early 80s and it increase it members nearly a million before the new millenium • The recent economic turmoil in the Asian region see MTUC loss nearly 125,000 of its member due to retrenchment and closure of MN Co factories • MTUC now expect to loss more members in 2001 & 2002 especially in the banking and construction sector due to globalisation • The affiliation lack of interest in getting more members, knowledge of new technology and globalisation concept add to MTUC struggle

Workers strength in Malaysia • There is about 8 million workforce in the country itself • 1 million of it are from the govt which is slowly reducing due to privatisation and old age • Almost 2.5 million are eligible to become union members but sadly to say they didn”t • MTUC have a membership drive campaign in early 2000 but it result is very minimal

  7. Targets Group • National Center • Affiliation Center • New EPZ Center • Young people

  8. Development objective To strengthen the union solidarity and reinforcing organisation structure as well as to promote union activities and benefits. Baharudin Abu Kassim

Development objective continuation • It will create a very strong solidarity movement • Proper data base information on affiliate membership and activities • More participant for forum, course, training and education project • More revenue for union movement • create a balance in social and economic justice

Immediate objective • To send letters, email, fax or visit nearby affiliate centre to ask membership numbers and activities • to form a committee in the national centre to handle all communication with the affiliates • Start union promotional campaign in the country through national centre network • visit schools, universities and college for potential members • Start looking for teachers association and get them inform of union movement

  11. Indicators of objective achievement • Stronger solidarity movement • Better affiliation participation and understanding • More ideas in promoting activities and action • Less report on workers right

Monitoring , Reporting and Evaluation Monitoring • All communication officer to have a monthly meeting on membership activity • All monitoring must be done in writing with minute attach • All communication officer to inform of any problem or any affiliate not reporting to them • The president or secretary general must be present during the meeting with their comment minuted

Reporting system • All reporting of any activities , campaign to be done in writing • We will gather all information and and update it into the data base for confirmation • Any affiliate not reporting on their activities will be call in to discuss if any problem arise • All reporting are to documented as to be use in future planning
