  1. Fortress of Louisbourg By: Mikaila, Olivia and Jessica

  2. Why was Louisbourg a threat to the English?

  3. The Fortress of Louisbourg was founded by the French in 1720 • It was located on Ile Royale (Cape Breton Island)

  4. The fortress was not only strategically placed at the entrance to the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River, but also an important settlement for fishing and fur trade

  5. The fortress provided protection for French fishing fleets, trading ships, and the colony in Quebec • About 500 Acadians moved to Louisbourg, but the majority stayed in their villages

  6. On June 16, 1745, Louisbourg fell to the English • However, it was returned to French control after the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in October 1748 • In 1758, another siege took place by the English which caused the end of French control of Louisbourg and Acadian lands
