Eating Disorders Eating disorders are serious conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, your emotions and your ability to function in important areas of life. People with eating disorders are at higher risk for suicide and medical complications. Some people with eating disorders may also have other mental disorders (such as depression or anxiety) or problems with substance use. Eating disorders can affect people of any age or gender, but rates are higher among women and adolescent .

The perception of body weight and shape is distorted and has an unduly strong influence on a person’s self-concept. To lose weight, some people with anorexia fast or exercise too much. Others may use laxatives, diuretics (water pills), or enemas. Early symptoms commonly appear in adolescence and young adulthood.
