  2. Classroom Management • We follow the “Perfect Day” system • Noise control – Bell & Countdown • Dojo – Reinforcing Positive Behaviour

  3. Learning Expectations • Students should come prepared to listen, engage and learn • Class Schedule • Bell Work • Learning Goals

  6. Writing – Workshops, Classwork & Journals • Reading – Text, Images & Videos • Oral - Public Speaking & Class Participation (Divided among terms one, two and three)

  7. 15-20 minutes of independent reading will be allotted every morning in class. Other elements include: • Novel Study • Response to Literature • Non-fiction (reading for understanding)

  8. Six + 1 Traits of Writing • Narratives • Poems • Writing to explain • Writing to convince • Journal Writing

  9. New words will be given on a weekly basis. Students areexpected to study at homedaily and should be preparedfor their spelling test on Fridays. Weekly words will be modified for individual needs and abilities.

  10. Evaluation: • Writing narratives, poetry, plays and non-fiction using the Six Traits (25%) • Reading comprehension –daily work (25%) • Tests and anecdotal evaluations(25%) • Homework (10%) • Journal (5%) • Conventions in all writing (5%) • Spoken language/participation in class (5%)

  11. Students must know their multiplication tables from zero through twelve. • Term 1: • Numeration • Addition & Subtraction • 2D & 3D Geometry • Measurement • Patterns • Multiplication & Division

  12. Term 2: • Multiplication & Division • Measuring Length • Dividing Decimals • Fractions, Decimals, Ratios and % • Perimeter & Area • Geometry • Term 3: • Data Management • Patterns and Motion in Geometry • Probability

  13. Evaluation: • Application problems in class throughout the year (30%) • Situational problems – two per term (30%) • Quizzes (20%) • Homework (10%) • Class participation/math vocabulary/talking to learn (10%)

Term 1: Earth, Our Home – sources of energy of living things, animals, plants, the Earth’s geology, pressure Term 2: Air in Movement – clouds, air, the atmosphere, weather Term 3: Profession: Engineer – heat energy transformations, gravity, force Evaluation: Labs (40%), class notes taken (5%), class participation in discussions (10%); homework (10%); projects (20%), tests (15%)

  15. Term 1: Democracy at Work Term 2: The Mi’kmaq and the Inuit Term 3: Quebec from 1900 to 1980 • Evaluation: • Quizzes to establish comprehension of the readings (25%) • Projects (individual and group) (50%) • Class participation/talking to learn (25%)

  16. Ethics Students will be exploring ethical issues and a variety of religious cultures through different approaches. They will be working on projects that will require individual research as well as the ability to work collaboratively with a group. The marks allotted will be based on the final project as well as each member’s individual contribution, as determined by the student him/herself, the other group members and the teacher.

  17. Art Students will create, interpret and appreciate various forms of Art. The student will be evaluated on the effort and use of the techniques that will be taught, as well as the capability to complete the work in a timely manner.

  18. Music GRADE 6: Will be taking part in the P-Bone program at the cultural center every Wednesday where they will learn music theory and how to play the trombone. GRADE 5: Will be taught theory by me using the SMARTboard and students will also get the chance to sing and play.

  19. Homework will be written in their agendas eachday and should be signed on a nightly basis as acheck to ensure completion and understanding. The maximum amount of time spent on homework should be 45 minutes to one hour. If it seems that the homework will take longer, stop. Then write a note in their agenda outlining the problem for me.
