Oligarchy • Rule by a few • Wealthy land owner/merchants • Rich get richer, poor get poorer • Big parties/fun while poor toil in the fields • Poor back Army leaders • Promised better lives
Tyranny • Rule by 1, taken by force • 600 BCE – not lawful kings • No hereditary line • Differing styles • Some are good = help poor • Some, Hippias, paranoid/harsh
Democracy • Rule by the people • 500 BCE Athens – all citizens share power • Direct Democracy • All citizens vote on all issues (US?) • Assembly • Any free man can speak/vote • Run day to day business • Lots of reversals (why?) • Many cities give up
