Monarchy: One Person Inherits Power Time: 2000 - 800 BCE Who: King At first chosen by people of a city-state Inherited position - title given to oldest son Responsibilities Made laws Acted as judges conducted religious ceremonies led the army during wars Used soldiers to punish people Advantages Power centralized Problem King is dependent upon others, "aristocrats", to keep him in power No check on the king's power Inherited power could lead to unqualified rulers

Oligarchy: A Few People Share Power Time: 800 BCE Who: small group of wealthy men Aristocrats or wealthy merchants Overthrew Monarch Responsibilities Passed laws Led military Advantages Power is shared Wealthy used laws to benefit themselves Problems Oligarchs ignore the needs of the poor Passed laws the poor didn't like The rich became richer and the poor became poorer

Tyranny: One Person Takes Power by Force Time: Mid 600's BCE Who: One person who is not a lawful king Government control is taken by force Usually a military leader 'Not always unpopular Son does not inherit his father's power Responsibilities Laws - fulfilling promises Military - protection of city-state Advantages Could help people Poor might have their debts cancelled Rich might have their land taken away Equalize conditions between rich and poor Problems Could be a harsh ruler Hippias Ruled well with his brother Hipparchus Enemies killed Hipparchus Hippias became a harsh ruler Forced to leave power Set up spies to report on anyone who criticizes the ruler

Democracy: All Citizens Share Power Democracy means "rule by the people" Advantages Any free man could participate Problems People could be persuaded to vote unwisely Important decision could be reverse after just a few weeks Most city-states returned to earlier forms of government Time: 500 BCE Who: all citizens Responsibilities Direct democracy Every citizen can vote on every issue Assembly or lawmaking group Any free man could speak to the Assembly Any free man could vote on a new law or proposal to go to war Representative democracy People vote for representatives who decide issues in their name
