Book p.2 Mary read a very interesting book telephones. How the Telephone Was Invented Do you have a telephone in your home? Who uses it? Do you use it ? Today, most of us have telephones in our homes. One hundred and twenty years ago ,people were not so lucky. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. He was very interested in how human beings make and hear sounds because he taught deaf people. He learnt about how the human ear hears sounds and began to experiment with sending sounds.
Book p.3 In those days, people sent messages by telegraph. At that time, telegraph messages could only be sent one at time. Bell improved the way telegraph Messages could be sent down one wire at time. Bell experimented some more and invented a microphone that could send sounds down a wire . Then, he invented a receiver that could collect incoming sounds. These became the two main parts of a telephone.
Book p.3 One day, Bell called out to his assistant over the microphone, “Mr.Watson, come here !I need your help !” At that time, Mr.Watson was on a different floor of the building. But he heard Bell’s voice clearly over the new device. He ran to help Bell and to tell him the good news. Bell had invented the first telephone, It was 10th March 1876.

That afternoon, she called her mother to tell her about their plans. Book p.7 Hello, Mum. John, Angel and I are going to make a birthday card for Aunt Pam. Do you think that’s a good idea? Hello, Mary. Yes! I’m sure she’ll love it.
Book p.8 Later that day, Mary wanted to call Angel to discuss what they should do, but she was not sure if Angel would be at home. Mary’s mother then told her that she could leave a message for Angel if Angel was not at home. “If the person you wish to speak to is not is not in, you may want to leave a message. Remember to say ‘Thank you’ to the person who answered your call and hang up the telephone after thanking the person.” That night, Mary called to see if Angel was at home.

Book p.9 Mary’s mother told her more about using the telephone. “When I answer the phone at work, the call is often for other people. I take down the message on paper and pass it on . Let me tell you about a message I took this morning.”

Mary’s mother tells her how to make an emergency call If you need to make an emergency call, go to the nearest telephone in a safe place, Pick up the receive and dial the number 999 Book p.10 The operator will give the fire Services Department this information, and they will be on their way immediately. First, tell the operator clearly who you are. Then, tell him or her what the matter is and the full address for the police to go. So, if I see a lot of smoke coming out of our neighbor's flat, I should dial 999 and say………. Hello, my name is Mary Lee. I live at flat A, 15/F, Lucky building, 88 Kemmedy Road.
