  1. Footsteps Darcy and Ellis

  2. What is the film about? How do we know • A family of three, who’s husband/father was in the army • We think that the father may have died in the war, we know this because the son’s sleeps with a picture of his dad. • It flashes forward about 10 years and it shows the son going off to the army, following in his dad’s footsteps, we know this because the son is dressed in uniform that represents the army.

  3. How does the opening sequence make people want to watch more of the film? • The high key lighting at the beginning juxtaposes with the dark, dull lighting which maybe signifies that something tragic has happened. This lighting change makes the audience feel the emotion. • The audience are interested to find out what event happened to make the significant change in mood. • The close up shot of the picture of the dad in the boy’s bed makes the audience wonder what happened to the dad

  4. Who are the character’s and what are we meant to feel about them? • The first scene shows that they’re a family, mum, dad and the baby. • It fasts forward about 10 years and we see that there’s no sign of the dad and there’s a photo of the dad in uniform which emphasizes that he was in the army and probably died during the war. • The body language of the mother indicates that she’s feeling very protective of her son. This is probably because her husband was taken away from her and she doesn’t want the same thing to happen to her son. • Then it fasts forward about another 10 years and we see the son packing his things and getting into a car. He’s also dressed in uniform like his father, which shows that he’s following in his father’s footsteps by joining the army. He wants to make his dad proud.

  5. What do you think, given the tone and language, the rest of the plot line would be? • We think that the rest of the plot line would be about the son’s time at the army and how the mother is coping without her husband and her son. Maybe the son ends up being killed as well, just like his dad. This could be why the opening sequence is called footsteps as he is following in his fathers footsteps, symbolizing whatever happened to the dad, could happen to the son.

  6. Aspects which you think are good/bad in terms of quality • We think that one thing that could be improved is the music because it doesn’t show the emotion change as the same piece of music plays the whole way through the sequence, including the happy moments. • Another thing that could be improved was that there could’ve been more sound effects and props to enhance the overall emotion of the sequence. • One good thing is that you can tell what has happened because the storyline was portrayed well by the actors in the sequence.
