Goal • Focus on either a public company or a division/business-unit of a public company, and a critical innovation issue that it is currently facing (or have faced) • You can concentrate on cases discussed in class. • For Example • how do you think Google+ take users from Facebook. • How can Intel become a forerunner in cell phone processors etc. • How can Amazon stay in business despite selling products below COG.

  3. Goal Note: You might not be able to gather enough information on your company/division to analyze every aspect of innovation covered in our course, but you must be able to conduct the analysis in terms of both the content and process of innovation. You also must provide specific and well-reasoned recommendations that integrate well with your analysis. To ensure that you are making good progress and to provide opportunities for feedback, there will be three “gates” that you must meet throughout the semester. Each gate will require you to turn in a portion of your analysis for review.

  4. Gate 1 (20 Points) • Requires your team to identify and agree upon a suitable project, and to provide a one-page write-up of the company selected, what the issue needs addressing, and a brief overview of the industry. • Size of the firm • competitors, complementors customers, suppliers, • Leading Products and Milestones. • Current Problems in Innovation NOTE : The analysis should be double spaced, typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins on all four sides. There are no formal requirements regarding the length of the analysis, but typical analyses are about 5-10 pages (plus exhibits). The first page must contain the name of your team and all the member names. Email Gate 1 at adatta@ilstu.edu on due day as per syllabus

Gate 2 (20 Points) • Organization and Industry Analysis of the firm • Industry Analysis: Porter’s five forces • Distinctive Competencies of the firm • Resources and Capabilities • Organization Structure NOTE : The analysis should be double spaced, typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins on all four sides. There are no formal requirements regarding the length of the analysis, but typical analyses are about 5-10 pages (plus exhibits). Gate 3 (20 Points) • you will concentrate on the specific problem that you mentioned in Gate 1 and your recommendations. • Current Challenges: What are some of the current challenges with the company? Are they related to products, processes, services, mergers, industry etc. • Recommendations: How do you Propose the problems be solved? What are your future directions? Dos and Don’ts : Paper • Cite when you use the Internet, the cases and everything. • Foot notes • References at the end • If you take a figure, a table from a source, cite it. • All figures and tables must be named and numbered. • Due date: Check Schedule in the Syllabus, 5:00PM Central. • Don’t be late.

  11. Dos and Don’ts : Paper • Full names of members and the course number on cover page • Relevant title (not Pepsico project or Denmark) • Page number on every page • Table of Contents in the beginning

  12. Dos and Don’ts : Paper • Read carefully for typos, sentence construction problems etc. • Some comparison with close industry rivals • Every group member to check before final submission • Bind or properly staple

Don’ts : Paper • General recommendations […the company should keep on doing what it is currently doing …the company should do what it can do best …the business model should be changed … the company should increase innovation or efficiency …the company should expand overseas] • Use of may be in recommendations • Illegible printing

  14. Dos and Don’ts : PowerPoint • Take Questions from Audience • Don’t read from notes • Each member must be present

  15. Dos and Don’ts : PowerPoint Content • Slides shouldreflect the content of the project report • Slides should appear in proper sequence • Use charts / tables to reduce # of slides • Choose appropriate color scheme and Font • Slides should not be busy (i.e. contain excess information)

Dos and Don’ts : PowerPoint Organization • Decide beforehand who is going to say what • Divide time accordingly • Each members should know his/her part well • Know your slides well • Don’t spend too much time on one topic (e.g., company history) • Include charts / tables / video as necessary • Rehearse at least one time

  17. Dos and Don’ts : PowerPoint Delivery • Introduce yourselves • Show that you are enthused • Do not just read from the hand-held cards / console monitor • Don’t turn back too many times to see the slides • Maintain eye-contact with the audience

  18. Dos and Don’ts : PowerPoint Delivery • Don’t look only in one direction / section of the audience • Speak with confidence • No chewing gums • Don’t lean on the console • Thank the audience • Answer questions with confidence

  20. Professional Courtesy • As a respect to your colleagues, I urge all of you to be present during the presentation even if your group is not presenting.
