  2. LITERACY SERVICE Learning ART APPLES! MATH NATURAL & SOCIAL SCIENCE MUSIC Cross-Curricular Emphasis Our goal was to build many cross-disciplinary activities for children including a service learning project and field experience! This unit can be used over a shorter or longer period by choosing different activities to suit the classes interests and abilities.

  3. LITERACY Small group “station” activities: Varied materials to form the word ‘apple’ and other related words; clay, putty, sand, markers, magnetic letters, paint, etc. Write a story/picture about our trip to the apple orchard/in response to one of our apple books. Games: bobbing for ‘a’pples: short CVC words they know that have ‘a’ sound, sort by ending; -an v.s. –at. Apples to Apples, kindergarten style! Matching words to pictures and writing them into categories according to word endings. • Great Books for Read Aloud: • Johnny Appleseed, retold by Bill Balcziak • Mr. Peabody’s Apples, by Madonna • The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Orchard, by Gail Gibbons • Up, Up! It’s Apple Picking Time!, by Jody Fickes Shapiro

MATH • Small Group “Station” Activities – basic to more advanced: • Apple Pie Game – sorting and counting • Apple Pie Game with partner – guessing and checking • Red/Green Apple O’s Race – more/less comparison • Apple O’s Game – addition • Apple O’s Game with partner – guessing, checking and subtraction. • Apple Match Game – counting and early algebra • Large Group Experience – Apples Taste Test – more/less comparison and beginning statistics Math/Literacy Connection: “Ten Apples Up on Top” by Dr. Seuss

  5. NATURAL SCIENCE Parts of an Apple Label an apple project together and in small groups. Students cut out parts from construction paper and then label them. How do apples grow? Timeline of stages: Buds -> Flowers -> Apples Teach students about the life cycle of apples. Apple trees during the seasons Art project showing an apple tree in each season Continuation of how to apples grow. What can apples make? Class makes an apple pie or Caramel Apples Show students that apples can be made into other things. • Science Related Books: • “Apples for Everyone” (Esbaum) • “Apples, Apples, Apples” (Wallace) • “How Do Apples Grow?” (Maestro) • “The Biggest Red Apple Ever” (Kroll)

MUSIC “5 red apples hanging in a tree, the juiciest apples you ever did see, the wind came by with an angry frown, and one little apple came tumbling down…” “I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas, (ooples and banoonoos, eeples an baneenees, etc.)” “Way up high in the apple tree, 2 little apples were looking down at me. So I shook that tree as hard as I could, and down came the apples and mmmmmm! They were good!” Each song has accompanying music and movement. Students will take turns choosing the song to sing, and pretending to be the apples, tree, wind, person shaking the tree, etc.

ART • “Ten Apples Up on Top” Drawing – connection of literacy and math. • Apple stamping project – motor skills and color balance • Apple Pie Magnets – fine motor skills, take home gift. • Apple Tree Sculpture “stampers” using paint and crab apples cut in half. Crab apples are a nice size for small hands.

  9. SERVICE LEARNING JUST A FEW IDEAS An apple-themed bake sale, proceeds go to charity of students choosing. A cook book of apple recipes, compiled by students to be sold at the bake sale. Go apple picking and donate them to a local food shelf. Host an apple-themed dinner @ school for staff and community; served by students. Volunteer at an apple orchard.   10. Cumulative Field Trip: The Apple Orchard! STUDENTS CAN: - take a hayride, see how an apple orchard is run. - learn how apple trees are cared for. - see the different kinds of apples that grow in MN. - learn what can be made from apples. - have a MN apple ‘taste test.’ - go out and pick their favorite! MN APPLE ORCHARDS: - Aamodt’s Apple Farm, Stillwater. - Afton Apple, Hastings. - Fireside Apple, Northfield. - Pine Tree Apple, White Bear Lake,
