  2. What is Ebola?? • The Ebola Virus is a zoonotic disease. • It is caused when Ebola viruses are transported intohumans through contact with dead or living infected species. • (disease named after a river in Sudan.)

  3. Study of Ebola • (this type of study is called virology) • Ebola viruses infect our cells by attacking its gene replication machine, and putting its own copy of RNA, and DNA into it, thus making the victim cell reproduce the virus, after it dies. • Ebola viruses can survive because it’s structures are adept to cells created by the immune system.

  4. Symptoms • Signs do appear after about 5 to 10 days post-infection. • Early symptoms arefever, severe headache, joint and muscle aches, chills, sore throat, and weakness. • Over time, the symptoms transform into nausea and vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), red eyes, big rashes, chest and stomach pain with coughs, big weight loss, and bleeding mouse, nose, rectum, ears and eyes.

  5. How to contract the disease. • There are multiple ways of contracting this disease. • Butchering, touching infected species can give you the virus. Hence the scientists have also been infected. • Waste: Tourists and miners in African caves have been infected by the cave inhabitants’ feces. • Human to Human can also be a way, as sick patients are touched by the people who take care of them.

  6. Incubation • The period of incubation is usually 2 to 21 days. • And during those days, as most diseases are, Ebola is highly contagious. • Even if the victim is dead, any type of contact can infect you, as mentioned in slide 2.

  7. Cure???? • So far there are no cures. • Only standard hospital treatments are given to the sick. • Scientists are still working to get a vaccine, though China declared that they have already made one.

  8. Prevention • To prevent this disease, there must be no contacts with the sick without safety. • In Africa, they reuse medical equipments without proper sanitation, thus infecting everyone. • Protective clothing, isolated patients, and infection control measures are also ways to prevent out breaks.

  9. The future? • The future for this disease seems unpredictable. • Since this is one of the most dangerous diseases, there are high chances of it being used as a biological weapon… • Research for vaccines have almost been complete, as scientists used three antibody molecules on apes (main victims), which made the results come out optimistic.

  10. Interesting Facts • The first recorded outbreak was in Sudan, near the border of Congo, in between June and November of 1976. • The first victims of this outbreak were the gorillas and apes, as 90% of them in the forests were wiped out. • The U.S. army recently declared that they made a vaccine out of an artificial tobacco plant, and China also (mentioned before) has created a vaccine that is said to cure patients 3 days after infection.
