Step 1 • Take Inventory • List all relevant information you know about the topic
Step 2 What do they really want? • Read the Prompt • What is the question asking you to do? • Look for key words • Jot down a preliminary thesis that ANSWERS the question(s)
Step 3 • OUTLINE! • It saves you time and will improve your score • DO IT!

Steps 4-6 • Making the Case
Step 4 • Introduction/Thesis statement • 3-5 sentences • DO NOT HIGHLIGHT (Should be obvious) X Thesis: xxxxxx xxx xxxxx xxxx xxxxx
Step 5 • Set the scene • 4-6 sentences • Talk about the time period • What was happening in US history generally
Step 6 • The Evidence • Clear • Consistent • Coherent • Supporting evidence • Names/major events • Cultural references • Specific historians • OK to use (Doc A, etc.)
TIP • It’s not wise to take a controversial stance in an essay!
Steps 7-9 • Wrapping Up
Step 7 • The Concession Statement • Some might believe… • Explain other side • Then refute it • Smooth transition to conclusion
Step 8 • Conclusion • Closing arguments • Reiterate strengths of your position • The last thing the reader will see
Step 9 • The intangibles • Spelling, punctuation • Neatness • Avoid cross-outs • skip a line between paragraphs • Black or blue ink • No wisecracks • No arrogant or immature commentary
