Timeline: 1490 to 1750 • 1492 • Christopher Columbus, a native of the Republic of Genoa in Italia, is commissioned by the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castillesets sail on the the first of four exploratory journeys. • August 3: Columbus sails from Europe to Asia via the Atlantic Ocean. • October 12: Columbus lands in the Bahamas.

  3. Timeline: 1490 to 1750 • Upon his arrival, Columbus encountered several hundred tribes of “Native Americans.” • Native Americans actually originated in Asia, travelling across the Bering Strait to reach North, South, and Central America. • Native Americans had probably been living in the Americas thousands of years prior to European exploration.

  4. Timeline: 1490 to 1750 • 1513 • Juan Ponce de Léon lands on the Florida peninsula. • 1515 • Vasco Nüñez de Balboa reaches the Pacific Ocean. • 1540 • Francisco Vázquez de Coronado explores the Southwest.

  5. Timeline: 1490 to 1750 • 1565 • Founded by Pedro Menendez, St. Augustine, Florida, becomes the first permanent European settlement in the soon-to-be United States.

  6. Timeline: 1490 to 1750 • 1586 • The English Colony at Roanoke Island disappears—and thus becomes known as the Lost Colony.
