  3. Prevalence of dementia • Age Approximate group prevalence • 65-69 2 % • 70-74 3 % • 75-79 6 % • 80-84 11 % • 85-90 24 % • 90-94 48 % • 95+ 57 % • Currently 750,000 people in the UK have dementia

Dementia • Main causes : • Alzheimer's disease, stroke • Physical effect : • Damage to and death of brain cells • Results for the person : • Memory impairment (particularly working – short term – memory) General cognitive decline • Personality changes • Results for the family : • Exhaustion • Treatments : • Only drugs which just slow the decline in about 50% of cases

CIRCA Computer Interactive Reminiscence Conversation Aid A hypermedia reminiscence system accessible through a touchscreen – used by person with dementia and a carer together Taps into the person’s long-term memories, which are often still well-preserved Takes the burden of control and direction from the carer Both parties can relax into an enjoyable and empowering conversation

  6. A challenge for MFL technology • Helping a user who • Cannot learn new skills • Has virtually no short-term memory (“What is this thing round my neck?”) Is easily confused • (Can think mirror reflection is a stranger looking in the window)
