  4. Samurai Religion • Many samurai’s began to practice a new form of Buddhism. • Zen Buddhism = a form of Buddhism where followers taught meditation and martial arts as a form of self discipline. Taught inner peace was found through self control and simple way of life. • Samurai had to follow a strict code of honor and loyalty called Bushido...what would be a good comparison to make from previous lesson?

Japan’s Feudal system • Shogun- commander of military forces • Daimyo- land owning, military lords; similar to the nobles in European feudalism • Samurai-warriors who served the Japanese lords and lived by a strict code of conduct. (Very similar to knights in European feudalism) • Peasant- a person in the low social class that worked land owned by someone else. SHOGUN DAIMYO SAMURAI PEASANTS

  6. Japanese Feudalism European Feudalism Wait…..who is missing?!?! The Shogun ran Japan’s government for about 700 years. While the Shogun was running the government, the Emperor remained in palace: studied, wrote poetry, made art, etc… SHOGUN/ KING DAIMYO/ NOBLES SAMURAI/ KNIGHTS PEASANTS
