It pushes an audience to think about an issue. • Read the following article. Penny Problem Should we get rid of the penny? “Find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you’ll have good luck.” So goes the saying. But these days, it seems many Americans get their luck somewhere else. Fewer and fewer people pick pennies up off the street. The coins are just not worth much. The United States Mind, where coins are made, is losing money on pennies. Each penny costs almost two cents to make. The group Citizens for Retiring the Penny wants to get rid of pennies. They say that all prices should be rounded to the nearest nickel. So a $14.99 DVD would cost $15.00. For a $32.57 bag of groceries, you’d pay $32.55. But the group Americans for Common Cents wants to keep the penny. They say that if prices were rounded up to the nearest nickel, more would be rounded up than down. And people who make small purchases—mostly kids and older people—would be hit hardest by the higher prices. What do you think? Should we get rid of pennies? 7th Grade Writing Applications 2.4 Write persuasive compositions

It pushes an audience to think about an issue.\ • Read the article and write an outline for a Persuasive Essay: Studying Pays Off Should students be paid to do well on tests? Scoring high on a test feels good. Getting paid for it feels even better. That’s what teens at Junior High School 123 in New York City are saying. Their school is trying to raise test scores—by paying for them. Students can earn up to $500 this year if they get good scores. Similar programs exist in other states, like Texas and Georgia. The programs seem to work. Students who are paid for good test scores have been doing better on tests. But some psychologists think the programs are a bad idea. They say that students shouldn’t study for money. Instead, they should work hard to take pride in their scores. The psychologists also think the good scores might not last. They say that people who are paid for an activity tend to enjoy it less. Also, students might become less interested in activities that don’t pay money. They might cut back on things like sports and helping at home. What do you think? 7th Grade Writing Applications 2.4 Write persuasive compositions
