  2. Codes and conventions why ? The media just like any industry has codes and conventions that people follow in the following presentation I am going to show you the codes and conventions to take into account when producing a factual radio podcast.

  3. Impartiality ... • One of the codes and conventions is Impartiality , this means to remain un biased towards one party , for example when producing my podcast it would been seen as biased if I reflected on the crimes and the commonly referred to evil side and didn't put the case of why it happened and the other side of Sutcliffe. It is important to do this as this effects the way the audience is addressed and the message that is portrayed to the audience the role of a factual podcast is o inform the listener and to allow them to make their own opinion and not to have your personal opinion reflected upon them , this also has legal implications as it illegal to be biased in the media to one party or slander one party. • Accuracy • Accuracy is key when producing a factual podcast it ensures that it is correct and factual and that nothing can be made up. To ensure my podcast is accurate I will have to produce a substacial amount of research both primary and secondary to ensure all that I believe to be facts are correct to ensure that I don’t use incorrect facts

  4. Objectivity .. • Objectivity is when you are Un-Opinionated in the podcast where you let the viewer make up their own mind and not try to enforce your opinion on the viewer. This allows your podcast to be more balanced and not Biased this also will let you stay impartial for example if I said in my podcast “Sutcliffe committed theses crimes as he believed that god was talking to him” this is showing objectivity as it is a fact and not my opinion I must stick to the facts and show all sides to the story . • Accesses/privacy • to ensure that the privacy of people is maintained I will only use direct interviews and facts and information already available in the public domain I must ensure that the information I portray is relevant and in the public interest.

  5. Contract with the listener ... • This means that before you start to record the podcastyou will tell the interviewee the do’s and don’ts. So for my podcast I would tell the volunteers that I will be factual on the podcast and also speak the truth, I will also not agree or disagree with opinions just to keep it fair and open but elaborate and ask why. • Representation • are statements that can put a person in a false light or view to miss represent someone is breaking the law to avoid this you must ensure that there is a balanced argument that refrains from being bias this will stop bias allegations being made against the podcast , for example “he did these awful crimes for no apart reason” this put Sutcliffe in a false lights and therefore miss represents him to the listener’s as I am not stating all the facts and reflecting my own opinion

  6. Subjectivity .... • Subjectivity is closely linked with objectivity. Subjectivity is a view that covers all the angles. The purpose of subjectivity in the media is to ensure that all the angles of a story is covered so that you can cover other codes and conventions for example in my podcast it is vital that I cover all the basis of the story and remain subjective in my delivery as this is such a hard hitting story. • Opinion is one of the codes and conventions I have to take into account when producing my radio podcast, I need to ensure that I keep my own opinions out of the product and concentrate on the accuracy needed and that it is 100% factual and not biased and of my own opinion. For example it would been seen as my opinion if I said “ I believe that he wasn't insane” this is my own opinion and not factual based this could bias the listener when they come to form their own opinion.

  7. Balance • , My podcast must be Balanced this means to show both sides of the argument to ensure it isn’t Bias both sides of the story must be shown fairly for me to achieve this I will have to show what Peter Sutcliffe did and its effect but also balance it by showing why he did it. • Bias When producing any form of media material it is vital that your product isn’ t biased , anything bias is generally is a one sided and therefore lacks a neutral point of view. For example in my podcast if I said “ he is a complete maniac and their was no reason behind the attacks” this is biased towards Sutcliffe as I am not presenting all the facts and using a balanced argument.

  8. Thanks for listening...
