  1. The New GSMP:ISDP Process Integration Project Update 29 July 2009

  2. Agenda • ISDP Background: The GS1 “Organizational Effectiveness” project • OE 3A • ISDP Project Reports • Key Transformation Proposals • Next Steps

  3. Organization Effectiveness Goals • Create one integrated GS1 organization (EPCglobal and GDSN will no longer be “separate” elements within the GS1 Organization) • Deliver greater support and value from Global Office (GO) to Member Organizations (MOs) • Deliver more effective support and greater value to GS1 customers (primarily through the MOs) that will result in faster and more effective adoption and implementation • Have the MOS more involved and engaged in GO processes • Create an integrated and effective process for the development of GS1 standards, solutions and services whilst ensuring the integrity and customer relevance of all development activity • Locate all Governance within Management Board (MB) and evolve composition and function of MB as well as other leadership bodies

  4. Background OE 3A Results: Industry Driven Organization High Level Framework of ISDP

  5. The New GS1 Organizational Flow Industries Consumer Goods HC GS1 Systems Development (Standards, Services and Solutions) Local Deployment & Support GS1 MASTER PLAN (3YP) (1YP) Transport & Logistics Others

  6. GS1 Six Steps Industry Engagement and System Development Observations, recommendation 1 Discovery - by MO's, GO etc. Global Engagement Plan 2 Initial contact & planning Community, definition of needs 3 Form community, define needs Requirements Document 4 Develop Standards & solutions Ratified standards, Guideline, Approved Solutions, Services Refer to ISDP Process 5 Deployment Meetings, feedback, refinements 6 Ongoing engagement & support

ISDP Team 1 - GovernanceDeliverables: New Governance Structure 1 • Form the “Interim Process Leadership Team” • Develop consolidated list of current governance bodies roles, including PG, BSC, TSC • Develop: • Governing Principles • Governance body charters, • Operational model and proposed membership • Gain BCS approval for permanent groups (w membership) • Create transition plan from current model • Execute transition plan for ratification

  14. Governing Principles of the New GSMP 1 Principle 1 - Openness & Transparency Principle 2 - User Driven Standards Principle 3 - Consistency Principle 4 – Stakeholder Participation Principle 5 - Standards Protection and Maintenance Principle 6 - Governance Principle 7 - Consensus and Voting Principle 8 – Global Applicability

  17. Team 3: Architecture 3 • The GS1 Architecture Group mission is to develop the GS1 System Architecture to assure the technical integrity of the GS1 System   • GS1 Architecture Group is responsible for making recommendations as an advisory group.  The group provides a supporting role to the New GSMP.  • GS1 Architecture Group is part of the governance of GS1 and reports to the Board Committee for Standards • The AG will be an integrated framework of teams comprised of technical experts from End User companies, GS1 Member Organizations, Solution Providers, Research Community, GS1 staff.

  18. GS1 ArchitectureGroup: Structure GS1 Architecture Core Team Core/Specialty members Technical experts GS1 Architecture Specialty Team 1(+) Core member Subject matter experts GS1 Architecture Specialty Team Ad Hoc teams as required 1(+) Core member Subject matter experts GS1 Architecture Specialty Team 1(+) Core member Subject matter experts GS1 Architecture Specialty Team Ad Hoc teams as required 1(+) Core member Subject matter experts GS1 Architecture Specialty Team 1(+) Core member Subject matter experts GS1 Architecture Specialty Team Ad Hoc teams as required 1(+) Core member Subject matter experts • Each Specialty Team is represented at Core Team meetings either by a Core Team member or invited guest.

  19. Why do we need an IPP? 4 • GS1 Working Groups specify business requirements, process, and specifications. Many patents exist and are being filed today in areas relevant to those requirements and specifications. • Companies could hold patents on aspects of the process that later deter implementation. • It is GS1’s role to protect the GS1 community and its investment in development and implementation to the best of its ability.

  20. How to address IP within GS1 4 • Develop and administer an IP Policy (must opt in) • Update integrated standards development process to allow for sharing of work in progress only with companies that have opted in to the specific WGs (including GS1 MOs) • Only those that have signed the IP and Opt-In Agreements can participate in GS1 Work Groups (standards development).

  21. Team 5: Industry Engagement 5 • Work Scope • Interlocks between all GS1 Global Office teams, MO's, members and external parties such as industry associations • Example on following slide shows interlock between Industry Engagement and Systems Development • Similar interlocks occur for: • Marketing • Public Policy • Solutions

  22. Team 5: Aligning “IE” and the New GSMP 5
