NUTRITION FACTS* • Increasingscientificevidenceofharmuleffects of TFA on health • especially on the risk of coronaryheartdisease (CVD) • TFA consumptionisassociated with a higherrisk for CVD than the consumption of saturatedfattyacids • Lack of evidence for anybeneficialeffects on health THEREFORE.... Industrial TFA (I-TFA) weregraduallyreduced in the USA and Western Europe due tosocietalpressure and legislative measures! * STENDER et al., N Engl J Med, 2009

SITUATION IN AUSTRIA PRIOR TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NATIONAL TFA REGULATION Results of the marketcontrolaction 2008 • 115 Samples – 15 for eachprovince • Bakeryproducts (doughnuts, puff pastry), French fries 42% of the sampleshad a TFA-contentabove 2%! Introduction of food labelling/legislative limitsseemednecessary!

  7. SITUATION IN AUSTRIA AFTER IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NATIONAL TFA REGULATION Resultsof a marketcontrolaction 2013 • 93 samples • Bakery (doughnuts, puff pastry), popcorn, sweetspreads NO product with a TFA Content above 2% I-TFA arenolonger a problem!

CONCLUSION • Significantdrop out of I-TFA in products on the Austrian market • Results of the regularlymarketcontrolactionhadshownthatNOproductcontainsmorethan 2 g/100 g I-TFA • Nosignificantincrease of saturatedfattyacidthrough the reduction of I-TFA • The datashowthat the Austrian TFA Regulation is a story of sucesstowardsconsumerprotection
