  1. Comparison of Ozone Concentrations between Atlanta and other Georgia cities Andrea Thompson EAS 6410 Spring 2004

  2. Overview • Looked at ozone data from August 2001 for 6 Georgia cities: Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Griffin, Tifton • Analyses performed: • Simple comparison • Correlation between Atlanta and each other city • Correlation of NOy b/t Atlanta and Griffin, Macon

  3. RH + 4O2 R’CHO + 2O3 + H2O Formation of Ground Level Ozone • Net reaction: • In urban areas, O3 production is limited by supply of HC’s (elsewhere by supply of NOx) (where R is an organic group; RH is a hydrocarbon (HC))

  4. Correlations with Atlanta concentrations • Best correlation with Macon and Griffin – both downwind of city (NOx and HC transported, not really O3 itself) • Augusta and Columbus not in direct wind path • Tifton too far away to be influenced

  5. Correlation with Atlanta NOy • Lack of strong correlation suggests these cities are more influenced by HC’s from Atlanta – have hydrocarbon-limited regime

  6. Conclusion • Macon and Griffin only cities really influenced by Atlanta • Probably influenced mostly by HC emissions from Atlanta (since NOx does not correlate strongly)
