  2. ELLIPSE An ellipse looks like a flattened circle. It consists of all the points in a plane that satisfy the following: a+b=(twice the length of the semi-major axis), where a is the distance from one focus to the point on the ellipse, and b is the distance from the other focus to the same point on the ellipse. www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/glossary/indexe.shtml Nature Picture www.gpnc.org/ellipse.htm This is a picture of a small ellipse shaped mussel. 10. Intersecting Lines Definition: Two different lines that contain exactly one point in common Textbook Natural Man Made The roof of this building intersects with the side of the other building to show intersecting lines. Image from google images This picture of trees represents intersecting lines with the trunk that cross eachother. Image from google images Image from mathworld.com

  11. Angle Definition: The figure formed by two lines diverging from a common point. Natural Man Made Textbook The edges and corners of this table create 90 degree angles. Image from Google images This house was built on a slanted street which created an angle. Image from Google images Image from mathworld.com

  12. Chord Definition: A line segment that joins two points on a curve. Man Made Textbook Natural The lake is connected by a line segment using two points on the edge of the lake. Image from Google Images The points at which Mickey Mouse's ears touch his head represent two chords. Image from Google images Image from Wikipedia

  13. Tangent Definition: Making contact at a single point or along a line; touching but not intersecting. Textbook Man Made This map of a city represents a tangent because the mina road follows a windy path where two points meet but never intersect. Image from Google Images The banks of this river represent a tangent because they all follow the same line and touch it but at no pint do they intersect. Image from Google images Image from mathworld.com

  14. Plane Definition: A surface containing all the straight lines that connect any two points on it. Man Made Textbook This land is a plane because it is flat and can only be connected by any points with a straight line. Image from Google Images Image from sparknotes.com This piece of paper is a plane because there are only two dimensions to it length and height. Image from Google Image

  15. Triangle Definition: The plane figure formed by connecting three points not in a straight line by straight line segments; a three-sided polygon Natural Man Made Textbook This missing piece of sidewalk is an example of a triangle because it has three points that connect with line segments. Image from Google Image The red train is a triangle because there are three line segments connected by three points. Image from Google Images Image from mathworld.com

  16. Circle Definition: A plane curve everywhere equidistant from a given fixed point, the center. Natural Textbook Man made This an example of a man made circle necklace because it is a continuous curve equal from all points in the center. Image from Google images The moon is an example of a circle because every curve is equal from the center. Image from Google Images Image from mathworld.com

  17. Cube Definition: A cube[1] (or regular hexahedron) is a three-dimensionalPlatonic solid composed of six square faces, facets or sides, with three meeting at each vertex. Natural Man made Textbook This house is a cube because when lifted it will have six faces. Image from Google images The rock is a cube because it is a three dimensional square with six faces. Image from Google images Image from Google Images

  18. Parallel Lines Definition: Parallel lines are two lines in the same plane that never intersect. Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook In this textbook example, lines a and b display parallel lines. Picture from Mathworld The sedimentary layers in this rock display the properties of parallel lines. Picture from Yahoo Images This area of grass was cut in rows displaying parallel lines. Picture from Yahoo Images

  19. Pythagorean Triple Definition: A Pythagorean triple is a triple of positive integers a, b, and c such that a right triangle exists with legs a, b and hypotenuse c. By the Pythagorean theorem, this is equivalent to finding positive integers a, b, and c satisfying a2 + b2 = c2 Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook This picture of a cubic zirconian portrays the image of a Pythagorean triple at the bottom and corners of the figure. Picture from Yahoo Images This statue from a Holocaust museum portrays angles of a Pythagorean triple on it’s bottom side. Picture from Yahoo Images This textbook example portrays the way angles come together to create a Pythagorean triple. Sides a and b connect at a right angle. Picture from Yahoo Images.

  20. Point Definition: A point specifies only location; it has no length, width, or depth. We usually represent a point with a dot on paper, but the dot we make has some dimension, while a true point has dimension 0. Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook This picture of the Bermuda Triangle has three ending points shown in the ocean. Picture from Yahoo Images This hand-drawn map represents different places by blue points. Picture from Yahoo Images This picture shows different points as they would be seen in a textbook. Picture from MathWorld

  21. Fractal Definition: A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry . Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook These students have made the basic shape of a triangular fractal by laying on the grass. Picture from Yahoo Images This is an example of a fractal from a textbook. Picture from Yahoo Images Each individual leaves of this fern displays the same pattern as the shape of the fern; showing a fractal in a natural state. Picture from Yahoo Images

  22. Oval Definition: A shape with any curve resembling an egg. Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook These figures made from play-dough hold the elliptical shape of an oval. Picture from Yahoo Images An egg is shaped like an oval. Picture from Yahoo Images This is an example of an oval drawn in a textbook. Picture from MathWorld

  23. Congruent Items Definition: Two figures are congruent if all corresponding lengths are the same, and if all corresponding angles have the same measure. They "are the same size and shape," though they may have different orientation. (One might be rotated or flipped compared to the other.) Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook This coconut is split in half resulting in two congruent pieces of a whole They are similar in size and shape coconut. Picture from Yahoo Images These homemade peanut butter cookies are congruent in their size and shape. They even contain similar markings. Picture from Yahoo Images This is an example of congruently drawn shapes would look like in a textbook. Picture from MathWorld

  24. Ray Definition: A ray can be thought of as a half a line. It has a point on one end, and it extends infinitely in the other direction. Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook This picture shows a ray of electricity. These rays have one starting point and then shoot off into the atmosphere. Picture from Yahoo Images This picture illustrates how a ray would be drawn in a textbook example. Picture from MathWorld This picture of a windmill shows an example of rays by its extending fans from one point. Picture from Yahoo Images

  25. Pentagon Definition: A five-sided polygon. The sum of the angles of a pentagon is 540 degrees. Naturally Occurring Man-Made Textbook This flower represents five edges which would classify it as having a pentagon shape. Picture from Yahoo Images This picture represents the shape of a pentagon as it would be illustrated in a textbook. Picture from Yahoo Images This clock has five sides which give it a pentagonal shape. Picture from Yahoo Images

  26. Square Definition A square is a plane figure having four equal sides. Text book Man Made Natural This is a picture in New England that I found online to represent a square because it’s in the shape of a square. This is a picture of a television that I found online to represent a square This is how a square looks in the text book.

  32. Parallel Lines cut by a Non-perpendicular Transversal Man Made Text book Natural This is what parallel lines cut by a non-perpendicular transversal looks Like in the text book. The support hinges on these fences create non-perpendicular transversals to the parallel lines created by the planks of the fences. The facets of this crystal form parallel lines that are cut by a non-perpendicular transversal at the tip.
