  1. 1 John 3:18 • My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. • Love should not be limited to speech • Love in deed (Actions) • Love in truth (Sincerity of Motive) • Rom. 12:9 love without dissimulation • 1 Pet. 1:22: unfeigned love, pure heart • Proper motives and actions required of us

  2. Doing The Right Thing For The Wrong Reason Is Wrong • 1 Cor. 13:1-3 (without love motivating) • Speaking the truth (I do nothing) 1 • Knowledge and Faith (I am nothing) 2 • Sacrificing goods and life (I gain nothing) 3 • Acts 5:1-11 Ananias and Sapphira • Contribution made to the church • Others had done the same thing (Acts 4:34-37)

  3. Doing The Right Thing For The Wrong Reason Is Wrong • Matthew 6:1-18 (hypocrisy in religion) • Giving Alms: 1-4 • alms (doing righteousness) 1 • giving to the needy 2, 3, 4 • Praying: 5-8 • Fasting: 16-18 • Abstaining from Adultery: Matt. 5:27-28 • Abstaining from Murder: 1 Jn. 3:15

  4. Doing The Wrong Thing For The Right Reason Is Still Wrong • 1 Kings 13:18 an old prophet lies • desired to show hospitality to the man of God • led to disobedience and death • Persecuting the church of Christ • Acts 26:9-11 “I verily thought” • Acts 23:1 “in all good conscience” • 1 Tim. 1:12-16 “I did it ignorantly in unbelief”

  5. Doing The Wrong Thing For The Right Reason Is Still Wrong • Does the end justify the means? • Saul became an example and a motivation to others to become forgiven: 1 Tim. 1:16 • Ananias and Sapphira influenced the church to grow stronger: Acts 5:11 • Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

  6. Disagree With Conclusion? • Are the statements “truisms” like Proverbs? • Prov. 22:6 • some exceptions can be produced • “child contributes without understanding” • “Wrong” and “Sin” are not synonyms • Mistakes are wrong (not always sin) • Period of training (1 Cor. 13:11) • Sing without the instrument (because everyone else is, opinion, tradition, option)

  7. Change Which Sign? • Should it read, “Doing the right thing for the wrong reason is right”? • motives and intentions do not matter to God • baptized because all my friends were • Should it read, “Doing the wrong thing for the right reason is right”? • Sincerity is all that matters • Situation Ethics (motivated by love makes any action proper)

  8. The Lord’s Invitation • Come forward, confess sin, state repentance • Because parents demanded it • Evidence will soon expose your sin • Godly sorrow • 2 Cor 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
