  2. 1st Amendment • Guarantees personal liberties • Freedom of religion, speech and press • Right to assemble and petition the government

  3. 2nd Amendment • Gives people the right to bear arms

  4. 3rd Amendment • Protects people from having to house troops in their homes during peace

  5. 4th Amendment • Protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures • Police cannot search a person, his/her belongings or his/her property without a warrant • Probable cause vs. reasonable suspicion

  6. 5th Amendment • Cannot be deprived of life, liberty or property because of the government (due process) • Miranda rights, double jeopardy, plead the 5th (self-incrimination), eminent domain

  7. 6th Amendment • In criminal cases, the accused are allowed a speedy and fair trial by jury • Right to face your accuser and the witnesses against you

  8. 7th Amendment • Civil Case = a case between people • Grants people all the same rights as the 6th Amendment in civil cases

  9. 8th Amendment • Protects people from excessive bail, fines and punishments • Punishment needs to fit the crime • Cruel and unusual

  10. 9th Amendment • Protects the rights not listed in the Constitution • People have rights even if they are not specifically listed

  11. 10th Amendment • Powers not given to the federal (national) government belong to the states or the people
