  3. “Return to Paradise”the movie Topic:

  4. Return To Paradise - A Prisoner's Dilemna Movie Review • Film Starring Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix.   • Three American men vacation in Malaysia, • The men have just met for the first time but bond closely.  • Two of the men return to the United States but one stays behind only to get caught with hash and sentenced to death by the Malaysian authorities.

  5. Movie review continued…. • the condemned man has no hope of escaping on his own. • He must rely on the other two men to return to Malaysia and take responsibility for the crime. If the two men return, both get three years on the horrid Malaysian prison system, and the condemned man is freed.

  6. If only one returns, the man returning gets six years in prison, and the condemned man go free. • If neither return, the condemned man dies.

  7. What is Prisoner's Dilmma • A basic game theory model. Where two prisoners are faced with a choice that would determine their length of sentence. The sentence for each prisoner varies depending on:1) If neither turns each other in,2) If both 'tell' on one another3) If one 'tells' and the other keeps silent

  8. Prisoners Dilemma Player 1 Player 2

  9. Return To Paradise - A Prisoner's Dilemma Case 1 Tony Sherrif

  10. Case 2 Tony & Sheriff Lewis

  11. Ordinal Pay-offs • Ordinal payoffs are numbers representing the outcomes of a game where the value of the numbers is not important, but only the ordering of numbers. • i.e. • best =0 • Second best=3 • Third best=6 • Worst =X

  12. Maximum and Minimum Tony Minimum pay off : 6 0 minimax Maimum payoff: 3 0 maximin

  13. Sheriff Minimum pay off : 3 6 maximum payoff : 0 0 maximin

  14. Constant or non-constant game • Sum of all pay offs is not equal

  15. VINCE Confess Don’t PHOENIX Confess Don’t Confess Don’t Confess HECHE Don’t

  16. Case 1 • If they both cooperate, the lack of testimony from the two prisoners weakens the case. There is still enough circumstantial evidence, however, to keep them in prison for two years each (payoff of 3 years off from the base sentence of five). (reward

  17. Case II • If they both defect, the testimony that each provides against the other is quite damning. But their slightly conflicting stories allows the judge to imprison them for only four years each (payoff of 1 year off from the base sentence of five). (punishment

  18. Case III • If one player defects and the other cooperates then there is no case against the defector, but a very strong one against the cooperator. The defector gets immunity and receives no prison sentence (payoff of 5 years off from the base sentence of five), while the judge throws the book at the cooperator who gets the full five year sentence (payoff of 0 years off from the base sentence of five). (sucker's payoff)
