  2. Regions of the Northeast • New England: • ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI • Mid-Atlantic States • NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, Washington, D.C.

  3. Some stats on the Northeast: • The most populated, urbanized, & ethnically-diverse region in US. • About 62 mill. (21% of U.S. pop.) live in the N.E. on 5% of U.S. soil • 40% of U.S. office space = 50 mi. w/in NYC • Highest concentration of factories, banks, universities & transportation centers • Produces 20% of nation’s GDP • Home to NYC (largest city) & Washington, D.C. (US capital)

  4. Physical Geography • Two main regions: • Appalachian Highlands • Older mtns. = erosion • Green Mtns. = Vermont • White Mtns. = New Hampshire • Mt. Washington = NH (6300 ft. w/winds over 225 mph!) • Atlantic Coastal Plain (Piedmont/Fall Line) • Flat area w/poor soils • Piedmont w/better soils • Estuaries—Great for ports • Fall Line—moving water (energy)

  7. Cape Cod Long Island is also a moraine Nantucket Martha’s Vineyard • Long Island, Cape Cod, Nantucket Islands, & Martha’s Vineyard • Cape: a peninsula that encloses a body of water • fgfg

  8. Climate of the Northeast • Humid continental • Natural hazards? • Hurricanes • Nor’easters • Winter storm along the East coast of U.S. & Atlantic Canada that has blizzard and hurricane-like characteristics

  9. Agriculture is limited in New England (rocky terrain & short growing season) • Dairy farming = most important (Vermont)
