  5. What is the Nature vs. Nurture debate? • This debate is concerned with the extent to which particular aspects of behavior are a product of either inherited (i.e. genetic) or acquired (i.e. learned) characteristics.

  6. What is “Nature”? • Genes • DNA • Chromosomes • Health changes (pregnancy, cancer) • “How you were born” • Health issues which run in families • Mental disorders, predispositions

  7. What is “Nurture”? • Environment: • Religion • Community • School • Parents • Friends • Life experiences

  8. In your notebook • Write down 10 characteristics about you, such as “smart”, “funny”, “pretty”,… etc. • Now, classify each one, as either originating because of Nature(Genetics) or Nurture (enviro) and specifically why you think this. Ex- “smart”-Nature- because my parents are highly intelligent Ex- “shy”- because I embarrassed myself for talking too much in 2nd grade.

Now that we’ve debated some issues… • Write a well written paragraph or two about the following: • If you had to live your life developing yourself under the influence of only ONE of the 2 concepts, nature or nurture, which would you choose, and why? • Consider the following: • How much (what percentage) of who YOU are is made up of nature, and or nurture? • Is there an aspect of yourself you would be willing to “give up”? • What evidence from class can you site SPECIFICALLY to back-up your argument? • Do you think you could choose one “faction” from the beginning of class, (athlete, academic, caregiver, truthful and honest, playful and kind).
