  1. Paul's Conflict with the Jews Erin Urbina Acts 21–24

  2. Nazirite Vows (Numbers 6:1-21) NAZIRITE: “set apart as sacred, dedicated, vowed”. A Nazirite vow could be for a period of time or for life. The ones who did this were regarded as men of God like the prophets. • Abstain from: • Drinking/eating anything from the grapevine • Cutting the hair • Contact with the dead Famous Nazirites: Samson (Judg 13:4-5; 16:17) Samuel (1 Sam 1:11) John the Baptist (Luke 1:15)

  3. Nazirite Vows continued... • ~ Acts 18:18 • ~ Acts 21:23-24 • Paul would make a customary payment at the termination of the vow to impress the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem with his high regard for the Mosaic Law. (Num 6:14-15; Acts 21:26) • Payment consisted of: • Yearling lamb (holocaust) • Yearling ewe lamb (sin) • Ram (peace) • Food and Drink Offerings

  4. Paul’s Speech to the Sanhedrin (23:1-11) • “…God will strike you, you whitewashed wall. Do you indeed sit in judgment upon me according to the law and yet in violation of the law order me to be struck?” (Acts 23:3) • “The attendants said, ‘Would you revile God’s high priest?’ Paul answered, ‘Brothers I did not realize he was the high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not curse a ruler of your people.” (Acts 23:4-5) “WHITEWASHED WALL” was used by Jesus when referring to the Scribes and Pharisees. (Matt 23:27) Paul is shown here as a model of one who is obedient to the law of Moses because he withdraws his accusation against the high priest. (Exod 22:27)

  5. Paul Found Innocent Acts 23:26-30 After learning that Paul was a Roman citizen, the commander wrote to the governor, M. Antonius Felix: “I discovered that he was accused in matters of controversial questions of their law and not of any charge deserving death or imprisonment” (Acts 23:29) Luke 23:4 or Aland 309 Jesus declared innocent by Pontius Pilate.
