  4. Purpose of school leaders • Why are you here? • What are some major thoughts from seminars so far? • What do you perceive as your biggest challenge?

  5. Purpose • This student, class, school? • Zone, vertical alignment? • Society, moral imperative, economy? • all of the above-you have a difficult job! • Universal goal of management: To leverage our skills, have staff flourish and multiply our effect

We’re all in this together • “Essential School Board Book”-Nancy Walser • Duty 1-Establish and promulgate ownership of the district’s vision and values • Duty 2-Articulate expected district results and monitor programs • Duty 3-Create the conditions for achievement of the District’s vision, values and expected results • Duty 4- Ensure a community-wide climate of commitment, respect and trust.

  16. Managerial Leadership • It’s not about you • Challenge your staff to develop solution • Be democratic, not autocratic

HR leadership • Lead by example; golden rule • Honesty may conflict with friendship • Surround yourself with great employees • Minimize drama and move forward • Create culture of openness, but learn to say “no” or “not now” • Encourage dialogue/delegate responsibly • Balance humility with strength • Always stress the broad goals of the SIP

HR evaluations • 360 evaluations are widely used • Peer evaluations- • CPA firm client satisfaction survey • Difficult to do properly-don’t ditch responsibility • Rewards are worth the pain and energy • You, as leaders, must continually strive to improve your staff-step it up or move them out

  20. Community relations • Partners in Education • What does that mean to you and what does that mean to your community partner? • How can it help you and your school? • What organizations might make a good partner? • Specific ways a community partner can help a school

Ideas to engage partners • Have a new or gently used book drive at your business to provide books for the school library, classrooms, or to reward student’s making positive progress in reading • Participate in school events, meetings, and performances • Be a mentor for a student that could benefit from a positive adult role model • Have a back-to-school supply drive with your employees to provide new school supplies for students in need

Start or support a school garden project • Provide a scholarship to students furthering their education • Provide prof dev speakers from your employee base for teachers and school administrators • Provide incentives for the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program • Participate in school Career Day event • Provide tour/field trips to your business

  23. Community engagement Ideas techniques • Identify businesses, churches in your areas • Invest time to make partner comfortable • Think about higher yielding partnerships • Correlate to your SIP • Tell your partners what you need; ask partners what they can reasonably do-make contract

Politics • School-avoid all the drama /focus on SIP • Peers-turn lemon in to lemonade • WCSD Strategic Plan-great retort to why • Local and state –you are faces of the District • people on street are generally uninformed, look ST and narrow at child—you must broaden the talk • Carson City-may not have adequate time to gain knowledge • You can and should strive to bridge these knowledge gaps.
