Outline for today’s workshop • Warm – up activity (a song) - to stimulate students’ interest and spark their motivation • Vocabulary activity - to help their comprehension of the vocabulary • Comprehension activities – to focus on the factual meaning of the text • Activities to encourage creative response and interpretation of students

  7. PROCEDURE • Write the first sentence of the novel. • Read your sentence. • It was morning, and the new sun sparkled gold across the ripples of a gentle sea. The wind was like a whisper in your face. The ocean stood still. • Imagine the situation and draw it quickly. What is missing in your picture?

  8. I’ll give you the text and I want you to change the underlined words with the antonyms. • The OLD (AGED) sun sparkled IRON /RUST across the BILLOWS of the STORMY/ROUGH sea. A fishing boat DID NOT CHUM the water. The wind was a SCREAM in his face. The ocean stood RESTLESS beneath him.

Read the first page of the novel and have a discussion about the character of Jonathan. • Can you compare it with another protagonist in any other novel you read? • What is the theme of the novel? • Discuss in pairs and be ready to explain your ideas. • HW – Write a poem/ an essay/or a letter to your friend entitled ‘I am no ordinary bird’ .

  10. DICING ACTIVITY Throwing the dice - the students are required to write down (talk) about a certain topic - they either have to compare something, analyze it or use it, etc. After that students discuss the topic.
