  16. FINANCE • Chapter boards must understand their fiduciary responsibility and what that entails • Financial oversight of budget and accounts • Financial stability • Appropriate revenue and expenditures • Appropriate financial controls • Tax filings

  19. MARKETING • Think about your key messages and concentrate on them • Your messages touch everything you do • They reach all of your audiences • Your must be relevant and consistent • You must deliver on what you say

  21. MARKETING • Be proactive and creative when asking the media to promote your chapter • Build relationships with specific reporters • Go to the media with story ideas • Have a designated and available spokesperson for the chapter

  22. NPD • Make it fun and interesting • Invite all past honorees and recognize them • Add a champagne toast • Have senior professionals create a “state of philanthropy” report for the local area • Host a pre-event honoree reception • Hold an after-party for the volunteers

NPD • Work with the economic climate • Price tickets at “break-even” for non-profits • Have a table price differential for members and non-members • Increase sponsorship efforts; have sponsor for each award • Have high impact/low cost benefits for sponsors • Evites for members, printed for others

NPD • Start planning for 2010 now • Use fundraising skills in NPD planning • Combine NPD and 50th Anniversary logos • Ask an AFP leader to speak at your event • Make outreach efforts to schools & youth-serving organizations early to encourage Youth in Philanthropy award nominations • Consider an outstanding youth as a speaker for NPD

  25. VOLUNTEERS • Put time into carefully recruiting volunteers • Take time to understand their: • Motivation and what they want • Interests, skills • Availability • Match them to the appropriate position • Effort at the front end will help you retain and recognize them effectively

  26. VOLUNTEERS • Re-assess your volunteer positions and assignments on a regular basis • Chapters needs change • People’s skills and interests change • Avoid burnout • Have a variety of opportunities • Make many of them short-term • Cross-train to offer variety and ensure succession

VOLUNTEERS • Recognize your volunteers • Make recognition meaningful to the individual • Relate recognition to their reason for volunteering • Ideas: • Potluck dinner for board members with families or friends • Gift certificate to favorite store or restaurant • Photo-collage showing service • Business card-holder for “Volunteer of the Month”
