Intro Are two different narratives of birth of Jesus found in the Gospels: Matthew: Matthew 1:18-2:23 Luke: 1:26-56; 2:1-40 Nativity stories have some similarities: Jesus is child of Mary Supernaturally conceived via Holy Spirit Mary betrothed to Joseph descendant of King David Angel announces birth

Intro Luke is the longest & most comprehensive Gospel; covers Jesus life from birth to death Luke was a Gentile physician and a companion of Pauls Only Gospel with detailed infant & childhood stories Goal is to present a detailed, historically accurate picture of who Jesus is; history is presented in terms of its theological significance

Intro Jesus came to save lost souls, to care for those who are marginalized, including the poor, children, women There are more stories about women in Luke than in any other Gospel Little people are receptive to Jesus but the leaders (who are supposed to know better) are not receptive bc Jesus came to change the social order, the status quo

    8. Intro: Luke 1:26-38 Mary is the center of the Luke story Angel Gabriel (Messenger) tells Mary she will be overshadowed by Holy Spirit & conceive a Son His name will be Jesus = Yahweh is salvation

Intro: Luke 1:39-45 Mary goes to visit Elizabeth Elizabeth was barren, older, now she is pregnant with John the Baptist Four oracles are pronounced when Mary visits Elizabeth: Mary is blessed and the child is blessed Mary is the mother of my Lord John the Baptist leaps for joy at the recognition of who Jesus is in Marys womb Mary is faithful and humble

    10. Luke 1:46-56 The Magnificat Song of praise from Mary Song is very similar to the Song of Hannah (1Samuel 2:1-10) Declares God has come to do a new thing, to bring down strongholds and elevate the meek and the poor Praises God for Gods kindness, tender mercies, & grace

Summary of Intro Birth announcements of John the Baptist & Jesus set the stage for the redemptive power of Gods love thru the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ God is coming to do a new thing, something that has never been done before God will continue to creatively find ways to get us back into relationship with God, even when we mess up

Summary of Intro God chose to come in the form of a human being to save us God wanted to let us know that God would use radical, even scandalous means to save us Comes in the form of a baby born to an unwed girl God reveals Gods plan to an elderly woman and an uneducated maiden The women accept the plan by faith

Summary of Intro Passage lets us know the importance of women in salvation plan of God Women are first to know who Jesus is Women are first to praise him Women are the first to be filled with the Holy Ghost Women are the first to proclaim the Gospel! Women are first true disciples first to know and follow Christ

    14. Summary of Intro God also breaks thru history at a time when people felt hopeless Being oppressed by Herod & Roman government God also links redemption to peace (v.79)

    15. Luke Infancy Narrative 1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.

    16. Luke Infancy Narrative 4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child

    17. Luke Birth Narrative While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, Lk 2:7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. Lk 2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

    18. Luke Birth Narrative Lk 2:10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Lk 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Lk 2:12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Luke Birth Narrative Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Lk 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. Lk 2:15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Lets go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. Lk 2:16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

    20. Luke Birth Narrative Lk 2:17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, Lk 2:18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

    21. Luke Birth Narrative Lk 2:19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Lk 2:20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. (Luke 2:1-20)

Luke Theme: Jesus is Humble Servant Luke reports that Jesus was born during the reign of Caesar Augustus, when Quirinius was governor and that a census was taken Historical problems: Quirinius was governor in 6CE; Herod ruled off and on from @ 37 BC to 4 CE No general census taken during this period Census didnt require one to go to ones hometown for a count

    23. Luke Theme: Jesus is Humble Servant Why is it important to Luke that he talk about Caesar Augustus and that Jesus be born in Bethlehem? Augustus known as the bringer of peace Luke is slyly saying that the real bringer of peace was the lowly Jesus, not the High and Mighty Caesar Important for Jesus to be born in Bethlehem bc he is the Son of David

Luke Theme: Jesus is Humble Servant Luke has Jesus born in VERY humble place Manger was a feeding trough for animals in barn Some also say manger represents humanitys rejection of Jesus (Isa. 1:3) Jesus first worshipped by lowly women (1st chapter), heavenly angels (Luke 2:13-14) & then lowly shepherds

Luke Theme: Jesus is Humble Servant Shepherds link Jesus to: God: In OT, God is often described as the Good Shepherd (Psalm 23) David Lowly & humble: shepherds were despised bc were dirty, unkempt, viewed as dishonest bc often grazed herds on other peoples property When shepherds see Jesus, they also worship him & share the Good News with others What was Marys reaction to the proclamation about her son?

    26. Luke 2:21-40 Jesus Presented in the Temple What happened to Jesus on the 8th day? Circumcised and named Afterwards, Mary & Joseph take Jesus to Jerusalem Jesus needed to be consecrated in the Temple (Ex. 13:2; 11-16) Mary needed to go thru purification ceremony (Lev. 12:1-5)

    27. Luke 2:21-40 Jesus Presented in the Temple What does Simeon say when Jesus is presented in the Temple? Confirms that Jesus is the long awaited Messiah Confirms that Jesus will be rejected

    28. Luke 2:21-40 Jesus Presented in the Temple Who is Anna? Continues the tradition of female prophetesses in the OT Miriam (Exodus 15:20) Deborah (Judges 4:4) Huldah (2Kings 22:14) Forerunner of prophetesses in NT Acts 2:17; 21:9; 1 Cor. 11:5 She also blesses Jesus

Luke 2:21-40 Jesus Presented in the Temple Whole point of the temple scene is to affirm that Jesus came to fulfill the law; All of the actions of Mary & Joseph fulfill requirement for newborns in Jewish law Simeon & Anna affirm that he is the long awaited Messiah, as prophesized in the Scriptures
