  1. Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting Today you will learn to: solve equations by using the Subtraction Property of Equality solve equations by using the Addition Property of Equality M07.B-E.2.2.1

  2. Warm-up Problem: Solve an equation by adding or subtracting Ron and Carl have just started collecting baseball cards. Ron has 13 more baseball cards than Carl. Ron has 27 cards. Write and solve an equation to find how many baseball cards Carl has.

  3. Solve Equations by Adding or Subtracting: Terminology You can use the properties of equality to solve any equation. To solve an addition equation you would use the: Subtraction Property of Equality -if you subtract the same number from each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal. To solve a subtraction equation you would use the: Addition Property of Equality - if you add the same number to each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal.

  4. Solve Equations by Adding or Subtracting Essentially, you will be using inverse operations, which “undo” each other, to solve these types of equations.

  5. Solve Equations by Adding or Subtracting: Examples Solve the following equations. Be sure to show ALL of your work. z + 7 = 15 j - 9 = 3 h + 13 = 9 y – 11 = 6

  6. Solve Equations by Adding or Subtracting: Word Problem Solve the following word problem. Write an equation and be sure to show ALL of your work. Stephanie wants to buy a new coffee maker. She finds one on sale and pays 50 dollars for it, after a discount of 20 dollars. What is the original price of the coffee maker?
