  2. Community Fair Proposal Who? Canty Staff, Students, Families, Community Members, Public and Private Organizations and Agencies What? A Community Fair When? May 2015 Where? Canty Elementary School Why? To promote the concepts of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Human Rights and to increase community involvement. The Canty School community is culturally diverse and families of varying cultural groups hold different perspectives on the topics of the environment and human rights. This fair is designed to recognize and respect these differences and to work toward a common goal of improving the physical environment of all our citizens.

  3. What are the 4 R’s? • Reduce • Reuse • Recycle • Human Rights

  4. Human Rights and the Environment All humans depend on a safe, clean, and healthy environment. Without a healthy environment in which to live, humans are unable to fulfill their hopes and dreams and live a life of pride and dignity. Conversely, the protection of human rights also helps protect the environment. When people are empowered to learn and participate in decision making, they are able to ensure the decisions made help protect and sustain their physical environments.

Aligning Content to Standards Illinois State Standards Science: • Know and apply concepts that describe how living things interact with each other and with their environment. • Know and apply concepts that describe the features and processes of the Earth and its resources. • Know and apply concepts that describe the interaction between science, technology and society.

Aligning Content to Standards Illinois State Standards Social Science: • Analyze and explain characteristics and interactions of the Earth’s physical systems. • Understand the historical significance of geography • Understand relationships between geographic factors and society. • Understand that scarcity necessitates choices by consumers • Compare characteristics of culture as reflected in language, literature, the arts, traditions and institutions. . • Understand the roles and interactions of individuals and groups in society.

Aligning Content to Standards Common Core Standards • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.4 • Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate. • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.5 • Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.6 • Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension or expression.

  12. Aligning Content to Standards TESOL Standards: Standard 1: English language learners communicate for social, intercultural, and instructional purposes within the school setting. Standard 2: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of language arts. Standard 3: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of mathematics. Standard 4:English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of science. Standard 5: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of social studies.
