  2. Students learn to speak, read, and write in Spanish and English beginning in Kindergarten following a 90-10 model. • 90% target language & 10% English • Began at Washington Elementary in CNUSD 9 years ago. Open to everyone regardless of background or learning disabilities.

  4. 7th-12th students take at least 2 courses in Spanish a year (30-70).

  5. Staff: • Nury Barrios • 9th grade - Spanish (Natives 2) • 11th grade - AP Spanish Literature • Cristina Sánchez • 9th grade - Art (in Spanish) • 10th grade - Spanish AP Language • Brian Suchsland: • 10th & 11th grade - History

Our Program goals • Students will gain: • Language proficiency and Academic Achievement in both English and Spanish. • Positive self-esteem, cultural awareness and sensitivity. • Students become bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural. • 80% of the world speaks English or Spanish. • Advantage to bilingual/multilingual professionals. • The global market requires bilingual professional. • According to research, bilingual students out perform others on achievement tests.

  7. How it’s done: • All the curriculum taught is aligned with the California State Standards. • Language is not taught in isolation, but contextualized. • Lessons are designed with the learning of the second language in mind. • There is a strict separation of languages during instructional time.

  8. Why dual language immersion? • Think back to your two years of high school foreign language. • Do you consider yourself fluent in that language? • Can you hold a conversation in French? In Spanish? In German?

  12. At the high school level • Students must take a total of 8 courses in Spanish. 4 courses in Spanish language and composition and 4 additional academic courses.

  13. Who benefits from new courses? • EL Students* may take these Spanish language and academic courses to fulfill their A-G requirements (similar to sheltered classes) *Studies show that literacy transfers from one language to another. • Students that have reached a Natives 2 level or equivalent will be able to take the academic Spanish courses (Art/History) • Dual Language Immersion participants

  14. The possibilities! • Recognition at Graduation • Seal of Biliteracy on diploma (to be approved by board) • Dual diploma • If the student passes DELE (Exam offered through the embassy of Spain)
