Aims – by the end of the session you will be able to: • explain the meaning of the word syllable • Understand the form of a Japanese Haiku poem • Find some appropriate adjectives for the theme of Hull Fair and know how many syllables they contain • Write a Haiku poem to reflect the atmosphere of Hull Fair • Research the Hull project if time allows

  3. What is a syllable? • In pairs, look in a dictionary and find the word ‘syllable’ • Write down the definition of the word syllable • Feed back to the whole group

  4. Definition ‘A syllable is a beat in a word’

  5. Japanese Haiku • A form of Japanese poetry • Written in a very set pattern of 3 lines • There are 17 syllables in all • In the 1st row there are 5 syllables • In the 2nd row there are 7 syllables • In the 3rd row there are 5 syllables • Each Haiku poem usually contains a ‘Kigo’ or season word to indicate which in which season the poem was set

  6. Example Roll up to Hull Fair, Autumn evenings beckoning, Excitement starts here!

In small groups: • Think of some adjectives to describe Hull fair, using the photographs as a stimulus for discussion (you can use a thesaurus to help you) • Write them down in a list • Work out how many syllables each adjective contains • Write them down on the worksheet • Use the adjectives to write a Japanese Haiku on Hull Fair

  8. You should now be able to: • Explain the meaning of the word syllable • Understand the form of a Japanese Haiku poem • Find some appropriate adjectives for the theme of Hull Fair and know how many syllables they contain • Write a Haiku poem to reflect the atmosphere of Hull Fair • Research the Hull project if time allows • Think about what you have learnt and record on to your record sheets
