  1. What are macronutrients? Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body – number 1 protein Success Criteria – Build – to enter into a discussion surrounding the three main nutrients we need for energy, protection, growth and repair Secure – to carry out three research tasks that build on your knowledge developed during lesson time.

  2. Protein • Questions – why do we need proteins? • What function does this have in the body? • What will happen if we do not eat sufficient protein in our diet? • What is protein made up of? Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body

  3. Protein • Behind water, protein is the most abundant substance in your body. • Protein is made up of amino acids. When you digest food that contains protein your body breaks the protein down in to these amino acids. Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body

  4. Protein There are 20 amino acids, each can be strung together in a different order in the body and this produces the different proteins. Task - Make notes from the following slides Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body

  5. When food is being digested the body selects the amino acids that are needed for a specific function and they are absorbed though the large intestine. • These proteins are needed to help develop and maintain your muscles and organs; in fact most of the bodies functions are reliant on there being enough protein. Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body

  6. Task 1- 2 - 3 • Draw up the protein values of different foods on page 1.4 – page 14 • Draw up the detail on how much protein we need to eat each day (different groups) • Now plan a meal for a meal for someone that has just had an operation on their body, they need a good source of protein (you will ccok this during the next lesson)

  7. Protein • Without enough protein your body cannot function correctly. Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body

  8. Protein • The correct amount of protein on the other hand assists in the building and maintenance of all body tissues and helps in the creation of enzymes and antibodies which are essential for all over body health. Lesson objective – to understand the functions of all three macronutrients and what they provide for the body
