A Seed—Inside and Out Glossary: • Seed Coat: Outer layer of the seed that protects the inside. • Cotyledon: Used for food until the first true leaves emerge and the new plant can start to photosynthesis. • Germination: When a seed starts to grow. The process occurs only when all environmental conditions have been met. (Sun, air, water) • Chlorophyll: Green cells, in plant stems and leaves, that trap energy from the sun. Essential for photosynthesis. • Photosynthesis: The plant uses chlorophyll, water from the soil, gas from the air (carbon dioxide), and energy from the sunlight to make food.

Plants Change as they Grow Instructions for Seed Growing Bags: • Fold paper towel and place it in the bag. • Staple through the bag and towel about two inches from the bottom. • Drop three different types of seeds in the bag. • Add water to dampen the towel. • Hang seed bag in window. • Observe your seed bag each day for one month. Measurement Activity • Use a ruler to measure your plant to the nearest inch and centimeter.
