Righteousness Through Faith. Righteousness is the state of one who is righteous. Therefore, a righteous person is one who conforms to a standard of right. But, God's word tells us that there is none that is righteous, thus the need for justification (to declare righteous).

  1. Righteousness Through Faith • Righteousness is the state of one who is righteous. Therefore, a righteous person is one who conforms to a standard of right. • But, God's word tells us that there is none that is righteous, thus the need for justification (to declare righteous).

Righteousness Through Faith • Righteousness Of God • An attribute of God or gift from Him • He is righteous - Rom. 3:5 • Also bestows it as a gift - Phil. 3:9 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.) Romans 3:5 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; Philippians 3:9

Background • A coupling of His righteousness & salvation - Isa. 46:13; 53:11 I bring My righteousness near, it shall not be far off; My salvation shall not linger. And I will place salvation in Zion, For Israel My glory. Isaiah 46:13 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:11

Background • Righteousness is the essence of His character - Isa. 45:24 • Man must come to God for righteousness He shall say, 'Surely in the LORD I have righteousness and strength. To Him men shall come, And all shall be ashamed Who are incensed against Him. Isaiah 45:24

Background • It is realized among men - Psa. 24:5 • Thru the Servant - Isa. 53:11 ("justify“) He shall receive blessing from the LORD, And righteousness from the God of his salvation. Psalms 24:5 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:11

Righteousness Through Faith • Righteousness Of God • Manifestations of God’s righteousness • In judgment on sin - Rom. 2:5 • In judgment against sin at the cross - Rom. 3:26 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, Romans 2:5 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:26

Righteousness Through Faith • Man’s Desperate Need • Jews practicing same - Rom. 2:1-2 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. Romans 2:1-2

  11. Righteousness Through Faith • Man’s Desperate Need • Both stand condemned - Rom. 3:9-10 • Law-keeping fails - Rom. 3:19-20 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. 10As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; Romans 3:9-10 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:19-20

Righteousness Through Faith • Man’s Desperate Need • Both stand condemned - Rom. 3:9-10 • All "law-keepers" cursed - Gal. 3:10-11 • Your "good life" not withstanding, hear this! • Do not despair, there is hope; there is a plan For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." 11But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith." Galatians 3:10-11

Righteousness Through Faith But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:21-26

Romans 4:3 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness." 23Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, Romans 4:22-24

  21. Righteousness Through Faith just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 7“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered;” Romans 4:6-7
