  2. How they opposed the Tsar Mensheviks: They were not opposed to revolution, but did not think it had to happen before conditions could be improved Bolsheviks: Opposed the revolution

Successes of the Social Democrats? • Spread knowledge of Marxism through smuggled propaganda. • Marxist ideas circulated amongst intellectuals and university students who would become riled up and active in protesting. • It had converted the likes of student Lenin in 1897, who would come to play a prominent part in the development of the party.

  4. Failures of the Social Democrats? Censorship, touch policing and the limited development of the industrial proletariat = Hindered its activities. Deich, responsible for smuggling Marxist materials into Russia, was arrested from suspicions of the Okhrana. The First Congress of the Social Democratic Party in 1898 was broken up by the Okhrana who arrested 2 of the newly elected Committee.
